Gangneung Day Trip from Seoul, Korea: KTX-Eum Fares and Times, Anmok Coffee Street and Jeongdongjin

EpicKor Editorial|

Last updated 31 October 2026. Train times and fares are Korail timetable data from the public data portal (data.go.kr) for Tuesday 3 November 2026, as republished by info.koreacharts.com and updated 31 October; confirm in the Korail+ app (코레일+). Bus fares are from kobus.co.kr and T-money, read on 31 October for the same day. Entry fees and hours come from the Ojukheon–Gangneung City Museum page (last modified 4 August 2026), the Gangneung Tourism Development Corporation's Badabuchae-gil page and Gangneung's bus information system (bis.gn.go.kr). Sources are listed at the end.

A Gangneung day trip from Seoul works best as a loop. Go out on the KTX-Eum (KTX-이음) from Cheongnyangni (청량리) to Gangneung (강릉): ₩26,000, about 1½ hours, with 25 trains a day from 05:27. Spend the day on Ojukheon (오죽헌, ₩3,000), Gyeongpo (경포) and Anmok Beach's coffee street (안목 커피거리), all free except Ojukheon. Then take the 16-minute train south to Jeongdongjin (정동진), and ride a direct KTX-Eum back to Seoul at 17:13, 19:32 or 22:00 (₩26,700). You do not have to go back through Gangneung. The trains for this plan cost ₩61,100. With Ojukheon and Sun Cruise (₩8,000), four taxi hops (about ₩20,000–36,000), lunch and coffee, the whole day comes to about ₩100,000–120,000 (our estimate).

This guide is the day plan. If you only want the transport comparison, or you are heading on to Sokcho, read Seoul to Sokcho: the bus vs KTX-Eum + bus instead.

Want a longer evening by the sea? Take the 19:32 from Jeongdongjin instead (arrives 21:29), or the 22:00 (arrives 23:52). If you stay in Gangneung town for dinner, the last train back is the 22:27, which reaches Cheongnyangni at 00:05. Seoul's last subways leave around midnight, so on that train you may finish by taxi (our station-by-station last-train guide).

Why end at Jeongdongjin? Jeongdongjin's direct trains to Seoul do not call at Gangneung Station; Gangneung Station's timetable lists none of them. So the coast station is not a detour on the way home; it is the way home. The only cost is the 16-minute hop down from Gangneung (₩8,400 on the KTX, or ₩2,600 on the local train when one fits, such as the 06:21 → 06:37).

Earlier start? The 06:27 from Cheongnyangni arrives at 07:59. That gives you Gyeongpo almost empty, but nothing on the list opens before 09:00, so the 07:52 is the better trade for most people.

Gangneung hotels on Agoda — when the day trip should become an overnight One night changes the plan. You can watch the sunrise at Jeongdongjin (the first local train leaves Gangneung at 06:21 and arrives at 06:37, before a 06:48–07:19 November sunrise), walk the cliff trail when it opens at 09:00, and take the train home without watching the clock. Rooms near Gyeongpo and Anmok are the easiest base for the beaches; rooms near the station are easiest for an early train. EpicKor may earn a commission if you book through this Agoda link, at no extra cost to you. Confirm dates, taxes, cancellation terms and the final price on Agoda before booking.

Seoul to Gangneung: KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni or Seoul Station

The KTX-Eum is the only train between Seoul and Gangneung, and it runs on the Gangneung Line built for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. It leaves from three Seoul stations, and the fare depends on which one:

FromAdult fareTimeTrains (Tue 3 Nov)First / last
Cheongnyangni (청량리; Line 1, Gyeongui–Jungang Line)₩26,0001 hr 27 – 1 hr 502505:27 / 22:34
Seoul Station (서울역)₩27,6001 hr 51 – 2 hr 111405:06 / 22:14
Sangbong (상봉; Line 7)₩25,6001 hr 28 – 1 hr 41905:33 / 20:28

Cheongnyangni is the station to use. Every Seoul Station train also stops at Cheongnyangni, so starting there saves ₩1,600 and about 20 minutes. It also gives you 11 extra departures. Use Seoul Station only if you are staying near it and the timing suits you. Sangbong is cheapest, but only 9 trains stop there.

Coming back, there are 25 trains from Gangneung to Cheongnyangni, from 05:20 to 22:27, at the same ₩26,000. From Jeongdongjin there are 8 direct trains to Cheongnyangni (₩26,700): 07:33, 10:32, 12:49, 14:30, 16:08, 17:13, 19:32 and 22:00. The same 8 run the other way, from Cheongnyangni at 07:05, 09:37, 11:20, 13:03, 13:42, 15:23, 18:41 and 20:11. So you can also do the loop in reverse: Jeongdongjin first, Gangneung last.

Book early for Saturdays. Korail now opens tickets two months before departure, at 07:00 (what the two-month window changed). Autumn weekend trains to the coast sell out. A standing ticket is cheaper and acceptable for a ride under two hours.

The bus from Seoul to Gangneung

Only the Dong Seoul bus is cheaper than the train, by about ₩1,700; the Gangnam bus costs ₩800 more than the KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni. Both take about an hour longer, so the bus makes sense mainly when the trains are sold out. These were the fares and departures on kobus.co.kr and T-money, searched on 31 October 2026 for Tuesday 3 November, after the 1 October bus fare rise:

Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gangnam), express bus₩26,800 deluxe; ₩34,800 premiumabout 2 hr 502306:00 / 23:00

The buses arrive at Gangneung's bus terminals on the western edge of town, near the expressway, not at the station. From there, Ojukheon is closer than the beaches. Weekend-morning buses to the coast sell out first, so book a few days ahead (our Sokcho bus guide has the weekend numbers for that route).

Ojukheon: the house on two Korean banknotes (₩3,000)

Ojukheon (오죽헌) is an early Joseon-era house named for the black bamboo (ojuk, 오죽) around it. It is Korea's Treasure No. 165 (보물 제165호). The heritage sign at the gate says it is one of the oldest houses in Korea. It is also the birthplace of two people every visitor to Korea has in their wallet. Shin Saimdang (신사임당), the artist on the ₩50,000 note, and her son Yi I (이이, also called Yulgok), the scholar on the ₩5,000 note, were both born here.

The site is a short taxi ride from Gangneung Station. Inside are the old house and the shrine to Yi I. The ticket also covers the Yulgok Memorial Hall and the Gangneung City Museum next door.

From the museum's own page (last modified 4 August 2026):

  • Fees: adults ₩3,000, youths and soldiers ₩2,000, children aged 7 and over ₩1,000. Free for children aged 6 and under and for visitors aged 65 and over. On the last Wednesday of each month ("Culture Day," 문화가 있는 날) tickets are half price.
  • Hours: tickets 09:00–17:00, grounds 09:00–18:00, open every day. On 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok only the house is open; the indoor halls close.
  • Parking is free. Pets, scooters and bicycles are not allowed in.
  • Keep the ticket. Shown on the same day, it gets you discounts at other Gangneung sights under the museum's package scheme. Examples: Jeongdongjin Time Museum (정동진시간박물관) ₩8,000 instead of ₩9,000, and the Coffee Cupper coffee museum ₩4,000 instead of ₩5,000.

Give it an hour. If you have never seen a Joseon-era yangban house, Ojukheon is the one cultural stop in this plan. If you have just come from Seoul's palaces, you can drop it and spend more time on the coast.

Gyeongpo: pavilion, lake and beach (free)

Gyeongpo (경포) is Gangneung's best-known beach, but the beach is only part of it. Behind it is Gyeongpo Lake (경포호), a lagoon cut off from the sea by the sand bar, with a path around it. On a hill above the lake is Gyeongpodae (경포대), a pavilion that Korean poets have written about for centuries. There is no charge for the pavilion, the lake or the beach; Gangneung's tourism portal lists Gyeongpodae, Treasure No. 2046, as open at all times with free entry. The museum's distance table puts Gyeongpo Aquarium, by the lake, about 3.2 km, a 7-minute drive, from Ojukheon. A taxi should cost roughly ₩5,500–6,500 (our estimate from the meter rates below).

Lunch. Between Gyeongpo and the sea is Chodang (초당), a neighbourhood known for tofu made with seawater as the coagulant (초당순두부). Its restaurants line the streets south of the lake. Look for soft tofu stew (순두부) or jjamppong sundubu (짬뽕순두부), the spicy version.

Anmok Beach coffee street: how a row of vending machines became a coffee town

Anmok coffee street (안목 커피거리) is a line of cafés facing the sand at Anmok Beach, south of Gyeongpo, next to Gangneung's harbour. It started with coffee vending machines. According to a Segye Ilbo feature (15 August 2026), quoting the Korea Tourism Organization, vending machines lined the beach in the 1980s and 1990s. After the 1990s, specialty and roastery cafés replaced the vending machines. Terarosa (테라로사) opened its roasting factory in Gujeong-myeon, south of the city, in 2002. The Gangneung Coffee Festival began in 2009 and draws more than 300,000 people a year. This year's festival ran from 21 to 25 October, so in November the street is back to normal.

The seafront at Anmok: a wide paved promenade beside the beach on the left, and on the right a parking strip and a row of two- and three-storey café buildings, one signed AM BREAD, under a clear blue winter sky.

What to know before you go:

  • There is no entry fee and no "official" café. Pick a café with an upstairs window seat facing the sea. In November the beach wind makes the terrace cold after about 15:00.
  • Hand-drip is the local style. Many cafés list single-origin pour-overs, a habit Gangneung's coffee scene grew from. A takeaway cup is fine; there is a long promenade.
  • Getting there: about 10 minutes by taxi from Gyeongpo (our estimate). Gangneung's Sea Tea bus (시티1) runs from Anmok coffee street to Jumunjin Beach, via Gyeongpo Beach. In that direction, Anmok → Jumunjin, its first buses leave at 08:00 and 08:40 and its last at 19:20 and 19:40 (Gangneung bus information system). When it launched in 2022 the city said it would make 16 round trips a day.

Jeongdongjin: the station on the beach, and the cliff trail

Jeongdongjin (정동진) means "the port due east" of the old royal palace in Seoul. It is a village south of Gangneung with a railway platform a few steps from the sand. Korean drama fans know it from the 1995 series Sandglass (모래시계), and there is an hourglass park on the beach. Most Koreans know it as the place to watch a sunrise.

The platforms of Jeongdongjin Station, with tracks running beside a sea wall and the East Sea on the left, catenary gantries overhead, and the ship-shaped Sun Cruise resort on the cliff in the far distance.

What to do in a late-afternoon stop:

  • The beach and the platform are free. Walk the beach from the station to the hourglass park.
  • Sun Cruise (썬크루즈), the ship-shaped hotel on the cliff to the south, charges non-guests about ₩5,000 for the theme park and viewpoint, open 07:00–18:00. That figure is from a tourism listing updated in March 2026; the resort's own site does not publish it.
  • Jeongdongjin Time Museum (정동진시간박물관): ₩9,000 for adults, or ₩8,000 with an Ojukheon ticket from the same day.

The Jeongdong–Simgok Badabuchae-gil (정동심곡 바다부채길) is the best thing at Jeongdongjin, and the hardest to fit into a day trip. It is a 3.01 km walkway along the base of the cliffs between Jeongdong port and Simgok port. The coast here is Natural Monument No. 437, a raised coastal terrace that the operator dates to a crustal movement 2 to 2.5 million years ago. Until it opened as a trail, it was a military patrol path for watching the coast. From the operator's page:

  • Fee: adults ₩5,000, youths and soldiers ₩4,000, seniors and children ₩3,000.
  • Winter hours, 1 November to 31 March: 09:00–16:30, last ticket 15:30. From April to October it is 09:00–17:30.
  • It can close at short notice. The operator can shut it or change its hours for natural disasters, for sunrise and sunset times, or for military operations. There are no toilets on the trail.
  • Getting there: bus 112 goes to Jeongdongjin's Hourglass Park (모래시계공원); from there it is about 800 m on foot to the Jeongdong ticket office. Village bus 958 stops at Simgok (심곡), about 450 m from the Simgok ticket office.

A steep, rocky coastal slope with layered reddish rock, pine and shrubs in the foreground and misty cliffs dropping to a rocky shore and the sea below.

To fit the trail in, reverse the loop. Take the 07:05 from Cheongnyangni to Jeongdongjin (arrives 09:00) and start the trail at 09:00. Then take bus 112 or a taxi up to Gangneung for the afternoon, and come home on the 21:33 or 22:27 from Gangneung. In the plan above you reach Jeongdongjin at 15:12, which leaves too little time before the 15:30 last ticket.

Getting around Gangneung: city bus and taxi costs

City buses. Gangneung's bus information system lists an adult fare of ₩1,530 with a transport card (T-money and similar) or ₩1,700 in cash. Seated "좌석" routes cost ₩2,160 by card. With a card you get two free transfers within one hour of getting off, as long as you tap your card on the reader when you get off. The same route number does not count as a transfer, and cash passengers get no transfers. Check the route and live arrival times in Kakao Map or Naver Map, not Google Maps (why Google Maps is not enough in Korea). The city's own site is bis.gn.go.kr.

Taxis. The base fare is ₩4,600 for the first 2 km, then ₩100 for every 131 m or every 31 seconds in slow traffic. This is the Gangwon rate set in August 2024, and we found no later change. A late-night surcharge applies from 23:00 to 04:00 (20%, rising to 30% from midnight to 02:00). In practice, most hops in this plan cost ₩5,000–9,000 (our estimate from the meter rate). For two or three people, a taxi between the sights costs about the same as the bus and saves a lot of time. Have the Korean name of each stop ready: 오죽헌, 경포대, 안목해변, 강릉역.

Is a taxi to Jeongdongjin worth it? The museum's table gives about 21 km and 30 minutes from Ojukheon. By the meter rate that is roughly ₩20,000 or more (our estimate), against ₩8,400 for the train. Take the taxi only if you have missed the train.

Sunset, Gangneungabout 17:27 (1 Nov) · 17:14 (15 Nov) · 17:06 (30 Nov)Our calculation

The sunrise and sunset times are our own calculation with the standard solar formula, at sea level. Checked against KASI's published New Year time for Jeongdongjin (07:39 on 1 January 2027), it gives the same minute.

What that means for a November day trip:

  • It is mild by day and cold by the water. Gangneung is usually warmer than Seoul in winter, because the Taebaek mountains shelter it from the north-west wind. The beach wind is a different matter. Bring a windproof layer and a hat. Korean convenience stores sell disposable hand warmers (핫팩) from November.
  • The light goes early. With sunset around 17:15 in mid-November, plan the coast for the afternoon and the coffee for the last hour of light. Jeongdongjin faces east, so the sun sets behind the hills there, and the beach is in shade before the official sunset.
  • The sea is for looking at. The beaches are closed for swimming outside the summer season, and the East Sea surf can be heavy in late autumn. The Badabuchae-gil can close for natural disasters or military operations, so call before you go (033-641-9444).
  • The sunrise needs an overnight. No train from Seoul arrives at Jeongdongjin before sunrise in November. The first local train from Gangneung on 3 November leaves at 06:21 and arrives at 06:37. That is in time for a 06:48–07:19 sunrise. Korail has not yet published the 1 January timetable, so for New Year check Korail when it opens: see the 1 January plan.
  • Snow is unusual in November on the coast, but the Daegwallyeong pass above Gangneung often sees the first snow (first-snow dates by city). The train runs in a tunnel under it.

BARO Korean pocket heat pack (바로핫팩), 10-pack — for the beach wind at 4 p.m. This is the iron-powder hand warmer Korean convenience stores stack by the till from November, made in Korea and labelled to the Korean 70 °C maximum. One in each pocket makes the Jeongdongjin platform at dusk bearable. If you only need one or two, buy them at a CU or GS25 in Gangneung instead; they cost very little there. Mistakes to avoid on a Gangneung day trip

  • Starting at Seoul Station out of habit. Cheongnyangni is ₩1,600 cheaper, about 20 minutes faster and has 11 more trains.
  • Going back to Gangneung Station to catch the train home from Jeongdongjin. Jeongdongjin has its own direct trains to Seoul (₩26,700); Gangneung's trains do not pass through it.
  • Arriving at the cliff trail after 15:30. From 1 November the last ticket is at 15:30, and the trail closes at 16:30.
  • Paying cash on the bus. Cash is ₩170 dearer and gets no free transfers.
  • Taking a taxi to Jeongdongjin. The train is 16 minutes and ₩8,400 (or ₩2,600 on the local train).
  • Planning the beach for sunset. The sun sets inland. Go to the coast in the afternoon, when the light is on the water.
  • Assuming the coffee festival is on. It ran from 21 to 25 October 2026. In November you get the cafés without the crowds.
  • Trying to add Sokcho to the same day. Sokcho is another hour north by bus with no train; it is a separate trip (Seoul to Sokcho, where to stay in Sokcho).
