Where to Stay in Sokcho for Seoraksan, Korea: Seorak-dong vs the Beach vs Daepo, by Bus 7-1's Last Ride

EpicKor Editorial|

Last updated: 13 October 2026. Bus times and fares were read from Sokcho City's bus information system (속초시 버스정보시스템, bis.sokcho.go.kr) on 13 October 2026; the route 7 timetable has been in force since 12 February 2025 and the 7-1 timetable since 6 March 2025. Registered hotels come from Sokcho City's tourist-lodging file on the public data portal (25 June 2026). Sources are at the end.

English answers to "where to stay in Sokcho for Seoraksan" usually say the same thing: stay by the beach, and take bus 7 or 7-1 to the park, "every 10–30 minutes, about ₩1,500". That is roughly right at noon. It is not the number that decides your base.

The number that decides it is the last bus out of Seoraksan's main entrance, Sogongwon (소공원). On the city's own timetable, the last route 7 leaves Sogongwon at 19:00. The last route 7-1 leaves at 20:35. Between 19:00 and 20:35 there are only two departures, 20:00 and 20:35. And the first bus of the day doesn't leave the depot until 06:30, on the far side of town.

So the question is simple. If your Seoraksan day fits between about 07:00 and 20:35, a beach or harbour hotel works and is cheaper and livelier. If it doesn't, sleep in Seorak-dong (설악동), the village at the park gate.

Distances are measured along the route line in Sokcho's bus system. The city does not publish stop-by-stop times, so the minutes are our estimate from the route length and the timetable; foliage weekends are slower.

The line that matters most: for an ordinary Seoraksan day (Sogongwon, Biseondae, Ulsanbawi or the cable car, back by dark), any of the first three bases works, and Daepo is the closest by the sea. Seorak-dong is the right choice in two cases: a start before about 07:30, or a car on a foliage weekend.

Sokcho stays on Agoda — use the map to check how far each one is from Seoraksan Search the whole city, then open the map: Seorak-dong is the cluster at the park gate, Daepo and Oeongchi the harbour at the south end, and Sokcho Beach the strip by the Express Bus Terminal. Buses 7 and 7-1: the real timetable

Both routes are run by two companies, Gangwon Bus Lines (강원여객) and Donghae Sangsa (동해상사). They start at depots in the north of the city, run south through downtown, the Express Bus Terminal and the Daepo port turn-off, then turn inland up the Seorak road (설악로) to Sogongwon, and come back the same way. On Sokcho's timetables the "terminus departure" column (종점발) is the time a bus leaves Sogongwon.

Fares, as of October 2026: ₩1,530 by transit card, ₩1,700 cash for adults; teenagers ₩1,230 by card, children ₩770. The same fare covers any trip within Sokcho.

Route and operatorFirst departure from the depotLast departure from SogongwonRuns a day (weekday)
7-1, Gangwon Bus Lines06:3020:3512 (13 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, adding a 07:38 from the depot)
7-1, Donghae Sangsa07:2120:007
7, Gangwon Bus Lines06:4719:0012
7, Donghae Sangsa09:2018:265

Together that is 36 buses a day out of Sogongwon on weekdays and 37 on weekends and holidays, so during the day one leaves roughly every 20–25 minutes. The evening thins quickly. After 18:00, buses leave Sogongwon at 18:09, 18:26, 18:43, 19:00, 20:00 and 20:35, and that's all. Donghae Sangsa also runs a final 7-1 at 20:30 from its northern depot that ends at Daepo and never goes up to the park.

The two routes differ only in the north of the city. 7-1 stops at the Intercity Bus Terminal (시외버스터미널) on its way to the park, where the Dong Seoul intercity buses arrive (on the way back it uses the Munhwa Hoegwan stop, 문화회관, instead); route 7 goes along the coast past Yeongnang-gyo and Yeonggeumjeong instead. From Jung-ang market southwards they share every stop, including Gwangwang Susan Sijang (관광수산시장) for the market, Gosok Bus Terminal (고속버스터미널), Daepohang Ipgu (대포항입구), the Seorak-dong C-district stops, Kensington Hotel (켄싱턴호텔) and Sogongwon (설악산소공원).

What the timetable means for your day:

  • The morning limit is real. The first bus leaves the northern depot at 06:30, and the first departure from Sogongwon is 07:20, so the earliest bus reaches the park shortly before that. In late October the sun rises at about 06:40 in Sokcho (our calculation), and you cannot be at the trailhead at sunrise by bus.
  • The evening limit is generous. Sunset is about 17:40 around 20 October and about 17:30 by 31 October (our calculation), and the valley gets dark sooner. A hiker who walks out by dark has buses for another two or three hours.
  • The danger is the gap. Miss the 19:00 and you wait an hour for the 20:00; miss the 20:35 and there is no bus. From Seorak-dong a taxi is the only way back, so have Kakao T set up before you go (Does Google Maps Work in Korea? Naver Map and Kakao T).
  • Check the live board. These timetables date from early 2025 and were still current on the city's site on 13 October 2026. Kakao Map and Naver Map show the live position of each bus.

Base 1: Seorak-dong, at the park gate

Seorak-dong (설악동) is the village strung along the last few kilometres of road below Sogongwon. It was Korea's school-trip capital in the 1980s and 1990s, then went into decline as day trips and family travel replaced group tours. In November 2022, YTN counted more than 130 lodgings and restaurants closed or suspended, about two in three, many of them left as empty buildings. Since 2020 Sokcho City has been running a ₩26.4 billion rebuilding programme in the area's B and C districts, including the Seorak Hyanggi-ro (설악향기로) riverside walk, a 2.7 km loop with a skywalk and suspension bridge that opened in July 2024.

What you get by staying here:

  • The park on foot, or one stop away. The Kensington Hotel Seorak (켄싱턴호텔 설악) at 998 Seoraksan-ro has its own bus stop just before Sogongwon. The C-district stops (설악동 C지구) are about 3 km down the road by bus.
  • A dawn start. Walk to the gate at first light, hours before the 07:20 bus crowd arrives from town.
  • A way through the foliage traffic. From 3 October to 8 November 2026, Sokcho City is running a special traffic plan on weekends and holidays. Cars are stopped in stages when Sogongwon's car park and access road fill, and are sent to the free car parks in districts B and C with a free shuttle up to the park. Cars carrying guests to Seorak-dong lodgings may pass after an on-site check, as may cars carrying people with limited mobility.

What you give up:

  • Choice. Sokcho's tourist-hotel register lists only two registered hotel-category businesses in Seorak-dong itself: the Kensington and one small hostel. The rest are motels, minbak and condominiums of mixed age; read recent reviews and look at photos dated this year.
  • Evenings. After the day crowds leave, few restaurants stay open late. The seafood dinner most visitors come to Sokcho for is a bus or taxi ride away.
  • The sea. You are in a mountain valley, roughly 9–11 km by road from the harbour.

Who should stay here: hikers planning the long routes, photographers who want the valley at dawn, and drivers on foliage weekends. Who should not: a first-time visitor on a one-night trip who wants the sea and a seafood dinner.

Base 2: Daepo, the harbour closest to the park

Daepo (대포동) is the fishing harbour at the south end of Sokcho, with the Oeongchi (외옹치) headland next to it. It is the seaside base nearest Seoraksan: the Daepohang Ipgu bus stop is about 11 km from Sogongwon along the route, and the buses turn up the Seorak road just after it.

What you get by staying here:

  • The harbour's seafood restaurants and raw-fish market on your doorstep for dinner.
  • Big resort hotels. Daepo-dong addresses hold five of the 26 registered hotel-category businesses on Sokcho's list, including Lotte Resort Sokcho (롯데리조트 속초) and two Benikea Hotel San & Bada properties.
  • The shortest seaside ride to the park, about 20–25 minutes by bus (our estimate).

What you give up:

  • The bus stop may not be at your door. The 7 and 7-1 stop at the port turn-off on the main road (Daepohang Ipgu), not on the harbour front. A hotel on the Oeongchi headland can be a 10–15-minute walk from the nearest stop (our estimate). Check the map before you book.
  • Downtown. The market and the Abai village ferry are about 15–20 minutes north by bus (our estimate).

Who should stay here: couples and families who want the sea, seafood and the quickest seaside ride to the park.

Base 3: Sokcho Beach and the Express Bus Terminal

Sokcho Beach (속초해수욕장) is the long sand beach in Joyang-dong, a few minutes' walk from the Sokcho Express Bus Terminal (속초고속버스터미널), where the express buses from Seoul arrive. Joyang-dong addresses hold five registered hotel-category businesses on the city's list, among them the Mare Mons Hotel (마레몬스호텔).

What you get by staying here:

  • The easiest arrival. Get off the bus from Seoul, walk to the hotel, and catch the 7 or 7-1 from the terminal stop in the morning. The fares and times from Seoul are in our Seoul to Sokcho bus guide: ₩24,300 deluxe from the Seoul Express Bus Terminal, about 2 hours 35 minutes, as of October 2026.
  • The beach in the evening, with the Sokcho Eye Ferris wheel on the promenade.
  • Every bus in both directions on the main road.

What you give up:

  • About 25–30 minutes each way to Sogongwon, more on foliage weekends, when the Seorak road backs up.
  • Quiet. The beach strip is busy on summer and autumn weekends.

Who should stay here: anyone arriving by express bus for one or two nights.

Base 4: Downtown, the market and the Intercity Bus Terminal

Downtown Sokcho, around Sokcho Jung-ang market (속초관광수산시장), the Abai village ferry (갯배) and the Intercity Bus Terminal, has the cheapest rooms and the most to do in the evening. It is also the farthest base from the park: about 17–18 km by bus route, 35–40 minutes (our estimate).

The one reason to stay here for Seoraksan is the Intercity Bus Terminal. The Dong Seoul intercity buses arrive there, and only route 7-1 stops at the terminal. Route 7 bypasses it. If you arrive late from Dong Seoul or leave early the next morning, a downtown bed saves a ride.

Who should not stay here: anyone whose trip is mainly Seoraksan. You will spend over an hour a day on the bus.

What the hotel register shows, and what it leaves out

Sokcho City published its list of registered tourist-hotel businesses (관광숙박업 – 호텔업) on the national public data portal on 25 June 2026. It has 26 entries. The file has four columns (type, detailed type, name, address) and no room counts. By our reading of the addresses:

Area (by registered address)Registered hotel-category businessesExamples
Seorak-dong (설악동)2Kensington Hotel Seorak; one small hostel
Domun-dong (도문동), the Seorak road between Daepo and the park4One family hotel and three small hostels
Daepo-dong (대포동), the harbour and Oeongchi5Lotte Resort Sokcho; two Benikea San & Bada hotels
Joyang-dong (조양동), Sokcho Beach and the Express Bus Terminal5Mare Mons Hotel; Miru Tourist Hotel (미르관광호텔); Hotel Good Morning; a hostel and a small hotel
Downtown: Gyo-dong, Dongmyeong-dong, Cheongho-dong5Two tourist hotels and three hostels
North: Jangsa-dong, Yeongnang-dong (장사동·영랑동)5Four hostels and one small hotel

The list is only the hotels registered under Korea's Tourism Promotion Act. It leaves out motels and inns, condominium resorts, Sokcho's many residence hotels (생활숙박시설) and pensions, which together hold most of the city's beds. Use it for one point only: most of Sokcho's registered hotels are by the sea or downtown, not at the park gate. Seorak-dong has two.

Seoraksan this October: entry, colour and the cable car

  • Entry: there is no national-park ticket. Since 4 May 2023, Sinheungsa, the temple just inside Sogongwon, has also stopped charging the cultural-heritage admission fee at the gate. The fee was scrapped at 65 temples nationwide, with the government paying the temples instead. The Sogongwon car park still charges for parking; on foliage weekends, use the free B and C district car parks and the shuttle.
  • Colour: the Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration recorded Seoraksan's first autumn colour on 28 September 2026, the same date as the long-term average. "First colour" means about 20% of the mountain, counted from the summit, has turned. The average peak (80%) is 17 October, and last year's came on 24 October. The Korea Forest Service's forecast map, published on 22 September, gives 20 October for Seoraksan, using a 50% definition. The colour starts at the summit and moves down, so Sogongwon and the valley floor turn last. The full forecast is in Korea Autumn Foliage 2026: The Forecast Peak Dates for Seoraksan, Seoul and Naejangsan.
  • The cable car goes up from Sogongwon and sells tickets on the day only. Weekend queues in October are the main reason to be at the gate early. Sokcho's electronic road signs show its running status and waiting time during the traffic plan.
  • From mid-November, many high trails close for the fire season; see the closures guide linked above.

Practical notes before you book

  • Card, not cash. Tap a T-money or other Korean transit card: ₩1,530 against ₩1,700 cash.
  • Ask for the stop name in Korean. For the park, it's 설악산소공원; for a Seorak-dong motel, find the nearest 설악동 C지구 stop.
  • Check the bus-stop walk, not just the distance to the beach or the park. In Daepo and Oeongchi especially, "near the sea" can mean a long walk to the main road.
  • Have Kakao T ready for after 20:35, and save your hotel's Korean address.
  • Book late October early. The colour on the lower slopes, the traffic plan and the cable-car queues all peak at the same time.

FAQ

Q: What time is the last bus from Seoraksan (Sogongwon) to Sokcho? A: 20:35, on route 7-1 (Gangwon Bus Lines). The other last departures are 20:00 (7-1, Donghae Sangsa), 19:00 (route 7) and 18:26 (route 7, Donghae Sangsa). After 19:00 there are only the 20:00 and 20:35. Times are from Sokcho's bus information system, checked on 13 October 2026.

Q: Is it better to stay in Seorak-dong or by the beach in Sokcho? A: By the beach or in Daepo for an ordinary Seoraksan day: you get the sea, seafood and buses every 20–25 minutes. Stay in Seorak-dong if you need to start before about 07:30, or if you are driving on a foliage weekend, when lodging guests' cars may pass the traffic controls.

Q: How much is the bus from Sokcho to Seoraksan? A: ₩1,530 by transit card or ₩1,700 in cash for adults, as of October 2026, on bus 7 or 7-1. Teenagers pay ₩1,230 and children ₩770 by card.

Q: How long does the bus take from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal to Seoraksan? A: About 25–30 minutes by our estimate (about 14 km along the route), longer on autumn weekends. From Daepo it is about 20–25 minutes, and from Jung-ang market and the Intercity Bus Terminal about 35–40.

Q: Is there an entrance fee for Seoraksan? A: No. There is no national-park ticket, and Sinheungsa stopped charging its cultural-heritage admission fee on 4 May 2023. Parking at Sogongwon is paid; the cable car is a separate ticket sold on the day.

The short version: Seoraksan's buses run late enough that most visitors can stay by the sea. Pick Daepo or the beach, be on a bus out of Sogongwon by 19:00, and keep the 20:35 as your fallback. Book Seorak-dong only if you need to be on the trail before the first bus arrives.
