Seoraksan Cable Car in Korea: ₩16,000 Timed Ticket and Real Waits

EpicKor Editorial|

Last updated: 22 Oct 2026. Fares, discount rules, the refund rule and the boarding procedure come from the Seorak Cable Car's own Korean guide page (설악 케이블카 이용 안내, sorakcablecar.co.kr), read on 22 October 2026. Wait times are from the operator's live ticket-office feed, logged by EpicKor that morning. Sources are at the end.

Search "Seoraksan cable car price" in English and you get a spread of old numbers. A tour listing still prints ₩15,000 for adults and ₩11,000 for children; a travel blog says ₩10,000. On the wait, one hiking blog says it "can rise up to two-three hours or more during peak season".

As of October 2026 the Seorak cable car (설악 케이블카) costs ₩16,000 return for adults (about $12) and ₩12,000 for children. It sells no one-way tickets and takes no bookings. And the "queue" is not really a queue. You buy a ticket at the booth, and the ticket gives you a boarding time. On Thursday 22 October 2026, at 10:29, the operator's live feed showed the booth selling tickets for 12:07, a wait of 1 hour 37 minutes. By 10:59 it was 2 hours 5 minutes. Miss your time and you pay 20% to get a new one.

So the useful question is not "how long is the line?" but "what boarding time will I get if I buy now?" This guide covers that, the fares (most discounts aren't open to foreign visitors), hours and winter, and why a night in Sokcho makes the cable car easy.

The fare: ₩16,000, and the discounts you probably can't use

The operator's guide page lists these return fares, all including VAT:

Ticket (return)WhoPriceAbout
Adult (대인)Middle-school students and older₩16,000$12
Child (소인)37 months to primary school₩12,000$9
Infant (유아)Under 36 monthsFree—
Senior (경로우대)65 and over, not in peak periods₩14,000$10.50
Disability (severe) or national-merit card holderAdult / child₩13,000 / ₩9,500$9.75 / $7
Sokcho residentAdult / child, one ticket each₩8,000 / ₩6,000$6 / $4.50

Three rules sit under that table, and all three matter to a visitor:

  • Discounts are for Korean nationals only. The operator's wording is that discount fares apply "only to domestic persons themselves" (국내인 본인에 한해서만). A 70-year-old visitor from abroad pays ₩16,000.
  • The senior discount is off in peak season anyway. The 2026 no-discount periods are 18 July–23 August and 19 September–15 November, the whole foliage season.
  • There is no group discount, and discounts can't be combined. Proof is checked at the booth; photocopies and photos of cards don't count.

The ₩15,000 and ₩11,000 in tour listings, and the ₩10,000 in older blogs, are out of date. If a tour quotes you the cable car "at cost", expect ₩16,000.

The honest downside: at ₩16,000 you are paying for about ten minutes of riding and a walk on a rock top. If the summit is in cloud, you will see very little. The operator links to a live camera on Gwongeumseong run by the Korea National Park Service (국립공원공단 CCTV). Check it before you buy, and on a grey morning, spend the money on lunch and walk to Biseondae instead.

How the timed ticket works: buy a time, not a place in line

The operator's boarding guide sets out the steps in order:

  1. Walk in through the park gate at Sogongwon (소공원). The cable car building is about five minutes on foot from the entrance.
  2. Buy at the ground-floor ticket office (1층 매표소). The ticket shows your boarding time. Keep it safe: lost tickets are not reissued.
  3. Go to the second-floor platform (2층 탑승장) five minutes before your time. Wheelchair users can ride, using the lift to the platform.
  4. Ride up to the Gwongeumseong station, and stay as long as you like.
  5. Come down in order of arrival. The ride down is not timed: you join the line at the top.

What this means for your day: you don't stand in a line for the wait. Once you hold a ticket, the hour or two before your boarding time is yours. Walk the flat path to Sinheungsa (신흥사), have coffee at Sogongwon, or use the toilets there (the ones at the top use foam, not water). Just be back on the platform on time.

The 20% rule. The FAQ is blunt: if your boarding time has passed, you "must pay a 20% fee and be reassigned a time". Refunds work the same way: full until 10 minutes before boarding, then the fare less 20%. On a ₩16,000 ticket that's ₩3,200 lost. If the car stops for wind or bad weather, unused tickets are refunded in full.

How the line moves. Two cabins shuttle on the line, each built for 70 and run with no more than 50 people. The operator says cars run every 10–15 minutes when it's quiet and every 5 minutes when it's busy. That capacity is fixed, so on a busy morning the boarding time on sale moves further out as more people arrive.

Real wait times: what the operator's live feed showed

The operator's website runs a live panel fed from its ticket office. It shows the running status, the boarding time now on sale (발매현황), the wait (대기시간) and a remaining headcount (잔류인원), which the operator doesn't define. EpicKor logged it on Thursday 22 October 2026, two days after the Korea Forest Service's forecast foliage peak for Seoraksan:

Feed time (KST), logged by EpicKorBoarding time on saleWaitRemaining headcount (잔류인원)
10:2912:071 h 37 min646
10:3912:251 h 45 min671
10:4912:451 h 55 min699
10:5913:052 h 05 min651

The status read "running normally" (정상운행) throughout. In half an hour the boarding time on sale moved 58 minutes, from 12:07 to 13:05. The feed showed the day's first run at 07:40; the official hours for the day said 08:00. Ticket sales close at 17:00.

How to read that for your own trip:

  • A weekday in peak foliage already means one and a half to two hours by mid-morning, and it grows. That morning, every ten minutes you took to reach the booth cost about twenty minutes of boarding time. Plan for the "two-three hours" English blogs warn of on a weekend.
  • Weekends start earlier. Maeil Shinmun reported on 9 October 2026 that on weekends a line forms at the ticket office from 7 to 8 a.m., before the first car. The operator's schedule opens at 06:30 on Saturday 24 October, against 08:00 on the weekdays around it.
  • The afternoon has a hard stop. If you take the last car up, the operator says you get only about 10–20 minutes at the top (it gives both figures) before you must ride down. There is no path down on foot.
  • Check the panel before you leave your hotel. It is on the operator's homepage, in Korean. Look for 발매현황, the boarding time on sale. If it already reads three hours ahead, go hiking first and come back.

Hours, winter, and when it stops

Hours change day by day. The operator's FAQ says the hours vary with the season and the weather, and they are posted each day at the top of its homepage. On 22 October 2026 the schedule read 08:00–17:00 for 22 and 23 October and 06:30–17:00 for Saturday 24 October. Treat any fixed English timetable ("9 a.m. to 6 p.m.") as a guess.

Wind stops it. The operator says the car may stop in strong wind or bad weather for passengers' safety, and safety inspections can also halt it. That is the reason it gives for taking no bookings: the weather decides on the day.

Winter: the car runs, the high trails close. The operator lists no seasonal shutdown. Three things change as the season turns:

  • From 15 November to 15 December, Korea's national parks close high trails for the wildfire season. At Seoraksan last autumn that meant every route to Daecheongbong, while the low trails from Sogongwon stayed open. Gwongeumseong was not one of last year's closed sections. The list and the ₩200,000 fines are in our national-park closures guide.
  • Daylight shortens. An afternoon boarding time leaves little light at the top. Check the day's posted hours before you set out.
  • The rock gets icy. Gwongeumseong's top is open rock. After snow or a hard frost it can be slick.

At the top, and getting there

The car ends at Gwongeumseong (권금성), an old mountain-fortress site about 699 m above sea level, with the beacon-tower peak (봉화대) and a small hermitage, Anrakam (안락암). On a clear day you look over Ulsanbawi (울산바위), Towangseong Falls (토왕성폭포) and out to the East Sea. Time at the top is unlimited, but there is no walking path down, so you must catch the last car. The upper station has a snack corner and a coffee shop. Strollers can't go up; there is free stroller storage outside the lower station.

Getting there: take Sokcho city bus 7 or 7-1 to the last stop, Seoraksan Sogongwon (설악산소공원). The city-bus fare is ₩1,530 by transit card or ₩1,700 in cash for adults. First and last buses are in our Sokcho stay guide, and buses from Seoul in our Seoul to Sokcho guide. The cable car has no car park of its own; drivers use the paid car park at Sogongwon, and on foliage weekends the city's traffic plan sends cars to free lots with a shuttle (details in the Sokcho guide). Entry is free: if an older guide tells you to bring ₩3,500 for the gate, you don't need it.

When to go: Seoraksan's colour starts at the summit and comes down, so the lower slopes around the cable car turn later (dates in our Korea autumn foliage forecast). On a weekday, be at the booth before about 09:00; on a weekend, at opening. Sleeping in Sokcho or Seorak-dong is what makes either possible.

The Osaek cable car will not open in 2026

You may read that a second Seoraksan cable car, from Osaek (오색) to Kkeutcheong (끝청) on the Yangyang side, is "opening in 2026". It isn't. The project's original target was to run in 2026. On 2 July 2026, at his inauguration press conference, Yangyang county governor Kim Jeong-jung said completion next year (2027) is "virtually impossible". The reason he gave was that changes such as the temporary construction ropeway sent the project back through the permit process. He put the cost at ₩117.2 billion, rising with each delay. MTN reported on 8 July 2026 that the transplanting of rare plants, a precondition for construction, was "virtually impossible this year". The county's revenue plan assumes a ₩17,500 fare.

For now, the Sogongwon–Gwongeumseong line is the only cable car on Seoraksan.

The short version: the Seorak cable car is ₩16,000, and the ticket is really a reservation for a time you can only make on the day. Check the live panel, get to the booth early, and do something else while you wait. On a foliage weekend, the people with morning boarding times are the ones who slept in Sokcho.
