Seoul by neighbourhood
Most Seoul guides hand you a list of cafes. That is the wrong order. The neighbourhoods here feel genuinely different from each other, and the reason is usually historical — a buried railway, a shrine approach, a district of workshops that emptied out. Work out which one you want, then book near it.
The “worth staying in” column is about accommodation, not quality. Two of these are excellent to spend an afternoon in and a poor place to sleep.

Each one leads with the thing that made the neighbourhood what it is, because that is what you will not get from a list of cafes.
Ikseon-dong 익선동Jongno-gu
Mass-produced from the late 1920s by Korea’s first modern developer, and it survived because redevelopment kept failing until 2018.
Best time: Weekday morning — the alleys are two metres wide
Euljiro 을지로Jung-gu
The bars exist because the printers worked night shifts, and Seoul designated the alley Future Heritage in 2015.
Best time: After 7pm, once the workshops shut
Yeonnam-dong 연남동Mapo-gu
Seoul buried the Yongsan line and turned the surface into a 6km park between 2012 and 2016. The shape gives it away.
Best time: Spring and autumn afternoons on the grass
Mangwon-dong 망원동Mapo-gu
Named after a pavilion built in 1424 and renamed in 1484 for its long views. The Mangnidan-gil nickname is borrowed from Itaewon.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the market fills up
Haebangchon 해방촌Yongsan-gu
The famous 108 steps are the surviving approach to a colonial-era Shinto shrine, and Sinheung Market dates from 1953.
Best time: Late afternoon, walking downhill
Mullae 문래동Yeongdeungpo-gu
Named after a spinning wheel, steel from the late 1960s, artists from the 2000s when cheap Chinese imports emptied the workshops.
Best time: Weekday afternoon, while the workshops are open
Seongsu & Hannam 성수동 · 한남동Seongdong-gu / Yongsan-gu
One is a former factory district that kept its warehouses; the other never had industry to convert. That is why they feel different.
Best time: Seongsu late morning, Hannam after lunch
Bukchon 북촌Jongno-gu
Built by the same developer as Ikseon-dong, roughly 300 houses a year. Designated a Special Management Area in 2024, with a ₩100,000 fine enforced since March 2025.
Best time: Before 10:30 — and the red zone closes to visitors at 17:00
Seochon 서촌Jongno-gu
A 1971 apartment block was demolished and the valley beneath restored to match Jeong Seon’s painting. The stone bridge in it was still there.
Best time: Late morning — market first, valley after
Seoul’s subway makes almost everything reachable, so the neighbourhood you sleep in matters less for transport than for what is outside the door at 9pm.
