Where to Stay in Seoul for the First Time: 6 Areas by Fare and Last Train
Last updated: October 2026. Figures are from Korean sources: the Seoul AI Foundation's 2025 analysis of foreign visitor movement (SKT roaming data, published July 2026), the airport bus operators' own fare and route pages (공항리무진 and K공항리무진, read 9 October 2026), Airport Railroad's published fare table, Seoul's open last-train data, and the hotel statistics in our Seoul hotel price guide. Prices are As of October 2026.
Most "where to stay in Seoul" guides choose by mood: Myeongdong is "convenient", Hongdae is "youthful", Gangnam is "upscale". None of that tells you what you will actually pay to get there from the airport, how late you can get home, or who you will be sharing the pavement with. Korea publishes those numbers, in Korean.
Here are the ones that decide it. On an average day in 2025, 100,910 foreign visitors passed through Myeongdong (명동), and 47.1 percent of everyone measured there was a foreign tourist. Hongdae (홍대) drew 40,213 a day and was one of the fastest-growing areas, up 10.5 percent on 2024. From Incheon Airport, the all-stop airport train to Hongik University costs ₩4,650 on a transit card, while every airport bus to the centre costs ₩17,000 or ₩18,000. On a Saturday night, the last Line 2 train from Hongdae that actually reaches Gangnam leaves at 23:16.
This guide puts those numbers side by side for the five areas first-timers compare, Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, Dongdaemun and Seongsu, plus Jongno and Insadong for palace-first trips. It is about which area. For what a room costs by month and star grade, see our Seoul hotel price guide. Travelling with young children? Our Seoul with kids guide has its own where-to-stay section built around elevators and nursing rooms.

Where foreigners actually are: the 2025 roaming data
In July 2026 the Seoul AI Foundation (서울AI재단) counted where short-stay foreign visitors (under 90 days) spent their time in 2025, using SK Telecom roaming data and immigration records. Daily averages:
| Place | Foreign visitors a day (2025) | Share of everyone there who is a foreign tourist | Who dominates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong (명동) | 100,910 | 47.1% | Japan and China |
| N Seoul Tower | 57,370 | 55.7% | n/a |
| Samseong Station and COEX (삼성역·코엑스) | 46,813 | 26.4% | n/a |
| Gangnam Station (강남역) | 41,210 | n/a | n/a |
| Hongdae area (홍대 일대) | 40,213 (up 10.5% on 2024) | n/a | n/a |
| Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) | Up 12.1% on 2024, the fastest rise | 19.6% | n/a |
| Namdaemun Market | n/a | 28.0% | Japan and China |
| Seoul Forest and Seongsu-dong | n/a | n/a | The Americas |
| Bukchon Hanok Village | n/a | n/a | Europe |
So "is Myeongdong too touristy?" has a measured answer: nearly half the street is visitors like you, mostly from Japan and China. That is either the point (multilingual staff, the airport bus at the door) or the problem, if you came to see how Seoul lives. Visitors from the Americas over-index in Seongsu and Seoul Forest, Europeans in Bukchon, and Southeast Asians at Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon. In the same study Gyeongbokgung had the best Google Maps rating of the sixteen sites (4.70).

The airport ride: ₩4,650 by train, ₩17,000 or ₩18,000 by bus
Two companies run the airport buses into central Seoul, at different prices. Airport Limousine (㈜공항리무진) charges ₩17,000 an adult on direct routes and ₩16,000 on routes via Gimpo Airport (6003, 6014), which is why English guides quote both. K Limousine (한국공항리무진, formerly KAL Limousine) charges ₩18,000 on every route, and from the airport it accepts only tickets bought at the counter or a machine: no cash, no transit card. Primary-school-age children (6–12) pay ₩12,000 on both.
| Area | Bus (operator's own route page) | Fare | Rail alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | 6001 (Myeongdong station, Seoul Station, Dongdaemun), 6015 (Myeongdong, Euljiro, Mapo), K Limousine 6701 (Myeongdong, City Hall, Gwanghwamun) | ₩17,000 / ₩17,000 / ₩18,000 | AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 4 two stops |
| Hongdae | 6002 (Hongik University stop by the Mercure and L7) | ₩17,000 | AREX all-stop to Hongik University, ₩4,650 |
| Gangnam | K Limousine 6703 (Sinnonhyeon, Seonjeongneung, Bongeunsa/COEX, Samseong, Yeoksam) | ₩18,000 | No direct train |
| Dongdaemun | 6001, 6002 (Heunginjimun), K Limousine 6702 (DDP, Dongdaemun station) | ₩17,000 / ₩17,000 / ₩18,000 | AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 4 |
| Seongsu | 6013 (Konkuk University, Seongsu fire station, Seongsu E-mart) | ₩17,000 | AREX to Hongik University, then Line 2 east |
| Jongno / Insadong | 6002 (Jongno 1-, 2-, 3-ga, Four Seasons/Gwanghwamun), K Limousine 6701 | ₩17,000 / ₩18,000 | AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 1 |
The train is where the gap opens. Airport Railroad's fare table (adult, transit card) gives Terminal 1 to Hongik University ₩4,650 and to Seoul Station ₩4,750; from Terminal 2, ₩5,250 and ₩5,350. A single-journey card adds ₩100 plus a refundable ₩500 deposit. The express (직통열차) costs ₩13,000 and reaches Seoul Station 43 minutes after leaving Terminal 1. Hongdae is the only area here the cheap train reaches without a change, in about 50 to 55 minutes. For two people that is ₩9,300, against ₩34,000 to ₩36,000 for two bus tickets to Myeongdong; the bus buys you no transfer with a suitcase.

K Limousine's first and last departures from Terminal 1 are 05:35–22:25 on 6701, 06:05–23:05 on 6702 and 06:15–22:55 on 6703. Landing late? Our airport guide and layover guide cover the night buses.

The night-out problem: when the last train home leaves
Seoul's subway stops around 00:50 on weekdays and 23:50 on weekends, and the last trains mostly run short to a turn-back station, so what matters is the last train that reaches your station. The pairs that catch visitors out, from Seoul's last-train data (full table in our last-train guide):
- Staying in Gangnam, night out in Hongdae: the last Line 2 train from Hongik University that reaches Gangnam leaves at 00:15 on weekdays and 23:16 on weekends.
- Staying in Hongdae, night out in Gangnam: the last train from Gangnam that reaches Hongik University leaves at 00:21 on weekdays and 23:24 on weekends.
- Staying in Seongsu, night out in Hongdae: the last Line 2 train from Hongik University toward City Hall that runs on to Seongsu leaves at 00:33 on weekdays and 23:33 on weekends.
- Staying in Myeongdong: Line 4's last trains leave Myeongdong at 00:50 northbound and 00:57 southbound on weekdays. The 00:57 goes only two stops, to Seoul Station.
If you will be out in Hongdae most nights, stay in Hongdae, not Gangnam: a taxi across the river after 23:00 carries Seoul's 40 percent night surcharge (to 02:00).

Area by area: who each one is for, and when it is the wrong pick
Myeongdong (명동): the default, for good and bad reasons
Choose it if it is your first time in Korea and shopping and street food lead the list. Line 4 runs to Seoul Station and Dongdaemun, City Hall is a walk, and three airport bus routes stop here.
It is the wrong pick if you want local Seoul (47.1 percent of the street is tourists) or a cheap room. Foreign guests fill 78 to 94 percent of the rooms at Myeongdong's big hotels, so the bargains go first.
Hongdae (홍대): the train-first, budget-first base
Choose it if you arrive by the cheap train, want nightlife or are watching costs: the direct ₩4,650 airport train, Line 2, and rooms from ₩90,000. Its hotels were still 87 percent full in 2025.
It is the wrong pick if your days are palaces and Bukchon, or you sleep lightly; the main streets stay loud long after midnight at weekends.
Gangnam (강남): for a purpose, not by default
Choose it if your trip has a reason south of the river: COEX, a convention, a clinic, a Jamsil concert. Gangnam rates fall at weekends, the reverse of the centre, so a Gangnam weekend is the city's best five-star value.
It is the wrong pick if you just want "the famous one". The palaces, Insadong and Myeongdong are north of the Han, there is no airport train, the 6703 runs every 45 to 60 minutes, and this is the dearest band here.
Dongdaemun (동대문): the cheapest central rooms
Choose it if you want a central base at three-star prices (from ₩80,000, mostly business-hotel chains). Lines 2, 4 and 5 meet at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park and three airport bus routes stop nearby.
It is the wrong pick if you want charm on your doorstep: this is a wholesale fashion district, busiest late at night and plain by day. Our Namdaemun vs Dongdaemun guide covers the markets.

Seongsu (성수): the second-trip pick
Choose it if you have done the classic sights and want cafés, design shops and pop-ups, with Seoul Forest next door. Late Line 2 trains terminate here, and the 6013 bus (₩17,000) comes from the airport.
It is the wrong pick if it is your first trip: no airport train, few hotels, and the palaces a cross-town ride away. Visit for an afternoon instead; it is six stops east of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park on Line 2.

Jongno and Insadong (종로·인사동): palaces at the door
Choose it if your list starts with Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung and Bukchon: you can walk to them, and the 6002 bus stops along Jongno.
It is the wrong pick if you want a busy night outside the door; it winds down after dinner. Watch event weekends at Gwanghwamun Square: a Jongno motel went from ₩140,000 to ₩500,000 for the March 2026 BTS show.

Two rules and one warning before you book
Choose by arrival and nights. Train, late nights, budget: Hongdae. Bus, early nights, first trip: Myeongdong. Palaces: Jongno. COEX or Jamsil: Gangnam.
Stay one area out to save. Hongdae and Dongdaemun are 10 to 15 minutes by subway from Myeongdong and ₩50,000 to ₩100,000 a night cheaper for the same grade.
The warning: "near the station" is not enough. Big Seoul stations have ten or more exits and some have only stairs; check which exit the hotel is by and whether it has an elevator on Naver Map (our maps guide explains how).

Q: Is Myeongdong or Hongdae better for a first trip to Seoul? Myeongdong if you will arrive by airport bus (₩17,000–₩18,000), go to bed by midnight and want shopping and the palaces close by. Hongdae if you will take the ₩4,650 all-stop airport train, go out at night or want rooms in the ₩90,000–₩200,000 band rather than Myeongdong's ₩150,000–₩300,000.
Q: Dongdaemun or Hongdae: which is the better base? Dongdaemun is more central for the palaces, Myeongdong and Line 4, and has the cheapest central three-star rooms (₩80,000–₩180,000). Hongdae has the direct airport train and nightlife. If your days are sightseeing and your nights are early, choose Dongdaemun. If you want nightlife and a cheap ride from the airport, choose Hongdae.
Q: Should I stay in Gangnam on my first trip? Only if your plans are south of the river: COEX, a concert at Jamsil, a clinic or a business meeting. Gangnam has the dearest room band in this guide (₩180,000–₩350,000), no airport train, and is a long subway ride from the palaces and Myeongdong.
Q: How much is the airport bus from Incheon to Seoul? As of October 2026, ₩17,000 for an adult on Airport Limousine's direct routes (6001, 6002, 6013, 6015 and others), ₩16,000 on routes that stop at Gimpo Airport on the way, and ₩18,000 on all K Limousine routes (6701, 6702, 6703). Primary-school-age children (6–12) pay ₩12,000.
