EpicKor Editorial|

Last updated 1 November 2026. The subway fare, distance and journey time are from Seoul Metro's route search, read on 1 November 2026. Opening hours and entry fees come from the Incheon Tourism Organization's site (itour.incheon.go.kr), the Wolmi Sea Train's official site (wolmiseatrain.or.kr) and the Jemulpo Culture Foundation's museum ticket page, all read the same day. Sources are listed at the end.

An Incheon day trip from Seoul needs one subway ticket and no car. Take Line 1 from Seoul Station (서울역) to the end of the line at Incheon Station (인천역): ₩2,150 on a T-money card, 38.7 km, about 68 minutes, with no change. Chinatown's gate is across the road from the station exit. The Jajangmyeon Museum (짜장면박물관) costs ₩1,000. The Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village and Jayu Park on the hill are free. The Wolmi Sea Train (월미바다열차), a 42-minute monorail loop round Wolmido, starts a short walk from the station and costs ₩11,000 Tuesday to Thursday and ₩14,000 at weekends. It is closed on Mondays. The fares and tickets in our plan come to ₩19,300 at a weekend, plus lunch.

Seoul to Incheon by subway: Line 1, fare and time

Line 1 runs from Seoul Station through Yongsan and Guro to Incheon Station, the end of the line. At Guro the line splits. Some trains go south towards Suwon and Cheonan. Board one marked 인천 (Incheon), or check the destination on the platform screen. Seoul Metro's route search, read on Sunday 1 November 2026, gave these figures:

Seoul Station → Incheon Station
Distance38.7 km
TimeAbout 68 minutes on an all-stop train, no transfer
Adult fare, T-money or other transit card₩2,150
Adult single-journey ticket₩2,250

Where the ₩2,150 comes from. The Seoul-area base fare is ₩1,550 by card for the first 10 km. After that, ₩100 is added for every 5 km, up to 50 km. Incheon is 28.7 km beyond the first 10, which makes six steps of 5 km and ₩600 on top. If you start somewhere else in Seoul, your fare is different. From Hongdae or Gangnam you change trains and travel further, so tap in and let the gate work it out.

Getting back. The last train from Incheon Station towards Seoul leaves at about 23:42 on weekdays and 23:34 on Saturdays and holidays. It runs only as far as Guro, where you change. These times come from a secondary timetable site (makka.co.kr, built on the national TAGO data), so confirm them in the Korail Talk or Kakao Metro app. Our last train in Seoul guide has the cut-offs in central Seoul.

One address change. On 1 July 2026 Incheon merged the mainland part of Jung-gu with Dong-gu into a new district, Jemulpo-gu (제물포구). Chinatown and Jayu Park, for example, now have addresses that start "인천 제물포구". A guide that still says Jung-gu was written before the change. Nothing has moved.

A sample Incheon day trip timeline (Saturday)

The walking order goes from the station to the village, then uphill through Chinatown to Jayu Park, and back down to the Sea Train. Each walk is short.

On a Monday the Sea Train, the Jajangmyeon Museum and Jemulpo Club are all closed. Go on another day.

Incheon Chinatown: what to eat and what it costs

Incheon's Chinatown dates from the port's opening. The port opened in 1883, and in 1884 the area became a Qing concession under Chinese jurisdiction. The Incheon Tourism Organization says it grew from traders who came to do business, not from refugees or labourers. That is why it looks different from Chinatowns abroad. Today most of the shops on the main street are Chinese restaurants. The tourism site's list of local foods is short: jajangmyeon, gonggalppang (공갈빵), the hollow "liar's bread", and wolbyeong (월병), moon cakes.

What does a bowl of jajangmyeon cost? The government price survey (참가격, price.go.kr) put the Incheon average at ₩7,083 in September 2026, against ₩7,808 in Seoul. Our Seoul restaurant prices guide has the full table. We could not find a dated menu price for any Chinatown restaurant from an official or menu source, so we do not quote one. Prices on the main street change, and restaurants display them at the door. Honest note: Chinatown is a tourist street, and you are paying for the setting as much as the noodles. If price is what matters, a neighbourhood Chinese restaurant in Seoul is the cheaper bowl.

  • Gonghwachun (공화춘) at 43 Chinatown-ro is listed by the tourism site as open 10:00–21:30 every day. Its house jajang is made with seafood, vegetables and potato instead of pork. It is not in the historic building, which is now the museum.
  • Shinseung Banjeom (신승반점) is run by a descendant of the Gonghwachun family, according to a Kyeongin Ilbo report of February 2026, and is known for its yuni-jajang (유니짜장).
  • Gonggalppang is a large hollow bun, crisp and mostly air.

The museum is in the building of Gonghwachun, the restaurant credited with putting jajangmyeon on an Incheon menu. Its story, as the tourism site and the Kyeongin Ilbo tell it: a Chinese immigrant, Woo Hee-kwang (우희광), moved his inn-restaurant to this spot in 1911. He renamed it Gonghwachun in 1912. It closed in 1983, when trade in the area declined, and reopened as the museum in 2012. The building is a registered national heritage site. Inside are six permanent rooms over two floors. They include a 1930s dining room, a 1960s kitchen, delivery tins and the history of instant jajang noodles. The Kyeongin Ilbo traces the price of a bowl from 15 won in the early 1960s to 3,000 won around 2000.

  • Entry: ₩1,000 adults, ₩700 teens, ₩500 military and police. Free for children and people aged 65 and over, according to the culture ministry's listing.
  • Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–18:00, last entry 17:30.
  • Closed: Mondays, 1 January, and Seollal and Chuseok. The foundation's ticket page says the Lunar holidays mean the day itself only; the tourism site says the holiday period. When a Monday is a public holiday, the museum opens and closes on Tuesday instead.
  • Combined ticket: the Jemulpo Culture Foundation sells one ticket for five open-port museums: this one, the Korea-China Cultural Center, the Open Port Modern Architecture Museum, the Incheon Open Port Museum and the Daebul Hotel exhibition hall. Its page did not show a price when we read it, so check it at the desk.
  • Time needed: 30 to 45 minutes.

Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village (송월동 동화마을)

Songwol-dong, just north of Chinatown, was a wealthy foreign quarter after 1883, the tourism site says, and later lost its young people and filled with empty houses. In 2013 the district painted the streets with world fairy tales and Korean folk tales. There are now 11 themed lanes, including Dorothy Lane and Little Red Riding Hood Lane. Telegraph poles are dressed as Jack's beanstalk, and gas meters as the Tin Man.

  • Entry: free. Hours: open 24 hours, every day.
  • There is a separate Trick Art Story gallery with 39 optical-illusion paintings. We did not find its fee on an official page.
  • Honest note: it is a photo stop, not a sight, and it is mainly for families. Allow 30 to 45 minutes, and skip it if you are short of time.

Jayu Park and the open-port streets

Jayu Park (자유공원) sits on Eungbongsan hill above Chinatown. The tourism site calls it Korea's oldest Western-style park, designed in 1888, according to the Incheon tourism site, by the Russian surveyor Sabatin, about nine years before Seoul's Tapgol Park. It was first called the "park of all nations", because it stood in the foreign concessions. The name Jayu ("freedom") became official in 1957, when the MacArthur statue went up. MacArthur led the Incheon Landing of 15 September 1950. The tourism site says the Seokjeongnu pavilion gives a view of Wolmido, Jagyakdo and Yeongjongdo. The park is free and open 24 hours.

From Chinatown, walk up the Three Kingdoms mural street (삼국지 벽화거리), a long wall of painted tiles from the Chinese classic. Inside the park, Jemulpo Club (제물포구락부), a 1901 club for foreign residents, opens 09:30–17:30 and is closed on Mondays. Our Goblin filming locations guide explains why K-drama fans come here. On the slope below are the old Japanese bank buildings of the open-port street (개항장 거리), now small museums.

Sinpo International Market (신포국제시장), ten minutes' walk south, is where the tourism site says dakgangjeong (닭강정) was invented. That is sweet, sticky fried chicken, and the famous shops have queues from the morning. It has about 162 shops, opens 10:00–21:00 and closes on the first Monday of each month and on the days of Seollal and Chuseok (the site's page was last updated in January 2025).

Wolmido (월미도) is a former island, now joined to the mainland, with a seafront of raw-fish restaurants, a small theme park and the Wolmi Culture Street. The tourism site gives it a circumference of 4 km. The easy way on and around it is the Wolmi Sea Train. It is an elevated monorail and the operator calls it Korea's longest urban tourist monorail. It runs 6.1 km round the island, 7 to 18 m above the ground, at about 10 km/h. A full loop takes about 42 minutes. It has four stations: Wolmi Sea Station (월미바다역), near Incheon Station, then Wolmi Park, Wolmi Culture Street and Museum.

  • Hours: November to March, 10:00–18:00 every operating day. In the April to October high season it runs 10:00–19:00 Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, and 10:00–18:00 Tuesday to Thursday.
  • Last loop: when it closes at 18:00, the last train leaves Wolmi Sea Station at about 17:05–17:10. Wolmido's sunset is at about 17:35 on 1 November and 17:15 on 30 November (our calculation). So in November the last loop goes round in the hour before sunset.
  • Closed: every Monday. When a Monday is a public holiday it runs, and the next non-holiday day is the day off instead. High wind or a fault can also stop it, and the operator sends a text that morning to people who have booked.
  • Tickets: there are no set departures, and cars run about every 15 minutes. Your ticket allows one reboarding on the same day. You can book online up to the day before; online tickets must be collected on the 3rd floor of Wolmi Sea Station. Seats are not reserved.
  • Honest note: ₩14,000 is a lot for 42 minutes. Incheon residents pay ₩8,000. If you only want the sea, walk the culture street instead. If you want the view of the port and the Incheon Bridge from 18 m up, ride Tuesday to Thursday.

At the Museum stop is the Korean Immigration History Museum (한국이민사박물관). It is free, open 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30) and closed on Mondays. It tells the story of the first emigrants who sailed from Incheon to Hawaii. On top of Wolmisan, the Wolmisan glass observatory (108 m) is open 07:00–22:00 by the tourism site's listing. It is about 30 minutes uphill on foot. Wolmido cruises (월미도유람선) run about 1 hour 20 minutes into the harbour, also closed on Mondays. We did not find a current official fare, so check at the pier.

From Incheon Airport, or on a layover

Chinatown and Wolmido are in Incheon, but they are not near the airport. The airport is on Yeongjongdo, across the water. Going via Seoul, the AREX express takes 43 minutes to Seoul Station (₩13,000), then Line 1 takes about 68 minutes back out to Incheon Station: more than two hours each way. A route app may show a quicker option on the AREX all-stop train to Geomam, Incheon Line 2 to Juan and Line 1 to Incheon Station; we have not timed it. A self-guided visit only makes sense on a long layover or the day before a flight.

On a layover, Incheon Airport's free transit tour is the better option. Its "Wolmi Park and the seagull ferry" tour runs Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, 09:00–13:00. A shorter Sinpo Market tour of the old town runs daily 15:00–18:00. You still go through immigration. Our Incheon layover guide has the entry rules, the minimum layover and how to register.

Mistakes to avoid on an Incheon day trip

  • Going on a Monday. The Sea Train, the Jajangmyeon Museum, Jemulpo Club and the immigration museum all close.
  • Taking a southbound train past Guro. Board one marked 인천.
  • Arriving at Wolmi Sea Station after 17:00 in November. The last loop leaves at about 17:05–17:10.
  • Expecting a cheap lunch on the main street. The Incheon average is about ₩7,000. Chinatown sets its own prices.
  • Booking the Sea Train online for today. Online sales stop the day before.

FAQ

Q: How do I get from Seoul to Incheon Chinatown?

A: Take Line 1 from Seoul Station to Incheon Station, the last stop. It is ₩2,150 by card and about 68 minutes, with no change. Chinatown's gate is across the road from the station.

Q: Is an Incheon day trip worth it?

A: Yes, if you like food history and the sea. In one day you can do Chinatown and the Jajangmyeon Museum, the Fairy Tale Village, Jayu Park and a Sea Train loop round Wolmido. The fares and tickets come to under ₩20,000. Go Tuesday to Sunday, because many sights close on Mondays.

Q: How much is the Wolmi Sea Train?

A: ₩11,000 for an adult Tuesday to Thursday and ₩14,000 Friday to Sunday and on holidays (confirm the Friday fare at the desk). A loop takes about 42 minutes, and your ticket allows one reboarding the same day. From November to March it runs 10:00–18:00 and closes on Mondays.

Q: What are the Jajangmyeon Museum's opening hours?

A: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:30. It is closed on Mondays, 1 January, and Seollal and Chuseok. Entry is ₩1,000 for adults.

Q: Can I visit Incheon Chinatown from the airport?

A: Yes, but it is a long trip: via Seoul Station it takes more than two hours each way, and a route app may find a quicker change via Geomam and Juan. On a layover, the airport's free Wolmi Park transit tour (Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday mornings) is easier.
