Andong Hahoe Village from Seoul, Korea: KTX-Eum, Mask Dance, Hanok Night
Last updated: 11 October 2026. Train times and fares are Korail timetable data for 11–17 October 2026 as republished by train.asamaru.net; Korail's own site blocks automated queries, so confirm in the KORAIL+ app. Entry fees, opening hours, the bus 210 timetable and the village minbak list come from the Andong Hahoe Village Preservation Society (안동하회마을보존회). The mask-dance schedule is from the Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori Preservation Society (하회별신굿탈놀이보존회). All were read on 11 October 2026. Sources are listed at the end.
Andong Hahoe Village (안동 하회마을) is one of the easiest UNESCO villages in Korea to reach without a car, but many English guides to it are out of date. The KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni is ₩27,700, with nine trains on weekdays and ten at weekends. The free mask dance is at 2 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday, with no Monday show.
The change that matters most right now is the gate. The village switched to its winter hours on 1 October. The last entry is now 4:30 p.m., and the same rule holds until the end of March. That changes how you plan a day trip, and it is the best argument for sleeping in the village: once the gate closes, a room in one of the 33 minbak on the village list is the only way to see Hahoe at dusk.

Day trip or a night? A day trip works if you take a morning train and go any day from Tuesday to Sunday. Stay the night if you want the village after the 4:30 p.m. gate, Buyongdae (부용대) cliff at sunrise, or Byeongsan Seowon (병산서원) as well, which the bus serves only three times a day.
Andong stays on Agoda — compare the city and the Hahoe area Be clear about what this search covers. Most of the old family houses (고택) inside Hahoe Village are not on Agoda: you book them by phone, or through Naver for two of them, from the preservation society's list below. Use Agoda to compare hotels by Andong Station and the bus terminal, which suit a 6 a.m. train, and the hanok and pension stays around the village. EpicKor may earn a commission if you book through this Agoda link, at no extra cost to you. Confirm dates, taxes, cancellation terms, room type and the final price on Agoda before you book.

Three changes outdated many English pages: a new Andong Station next to the bus terminal in Songhyeon-dong (송현동), opened on 17 December 2020; a new Hahoe bus number, 210, on a timetable dated 21 March 2022; and one extra KTX-Eum each way from 30 December 2025 (announced as 18 to 20 trains a day, both directions). In the October 2026 timetable that extra pair, 781 and 782, runs on Saturdays and Sundays only.
| What older pages say | What is true in October 2026 |
|---|---|
| "7–8 trains a day" | 9 KTX-Eum on weekdays, 10 at weekends, plus 4 ITX-Maum each way |
| Bus 46 (the mask-dance society's own home page still shows it, at ₩1,200) | Bus 210, ₩1,500; Andong city lists 210 and Express 2 (급행2) |
| Mask dance "daily at 2 p.m." | Tuesday to Sunday, March–December; weekends only in January–February |
| "Free for seniors" (Andong city's fee page says just "65 and over") | The village's own rules say free at 65+ for Korean nationals (내국인). Expect foreign seniors to pay ₩5,000 |
| Winter hours "from November", as at most Andong sites | At Hahoe, last entry 4:30 p.m. from 1 October to 31 March |
Getting there: the KTX-Eum from Cheongnyangni

The KTX-Eum is Korail's newer and slightly slower high-speed train. It is the only fast train on the Jungang Line, and almost every Andong service starts at Cheongnyangni (청량리) in north-east Seoul, on subway Line 1 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. Five a day start further back at Seoul Station, which costs ₩29,300 and adds about 20 minutes. For the KORAIL+ app and the September merger with SRT, see our KTX and SRT merger guide.
Southbound KTX-Eum departures for 11–17 October 2026:
| Train | Leaves Cheongnyangni | Arrives Andong | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 701 | 05:40 | 07:32 | Daily |
| 703 | 06:27 | 08:30 | Daily |
| 705 | 09:18 (Seoul Station 08:57) | 11:11 | Daily |
| 707 | 11:20 (Seoul Station 10:59) | 13:25 | Daily |
| 709 | 13:16 (Seoul Station 12:55) | 15:10 | Daily |
| 781 | 13:57 | 15:45 | Sat–Sun |
| 711, 713, 715, 717 | 14:17 (Seoul Station 13:55), 14:40, 16:32 (Seoul Station 16:11), 19:00 | 16:11, 16:35, 18:36, 20:55 | Daily |
Coming back, the KTX-Eum leaves Andong at 06:01, 07:55, 10:02, 11:07, 12:01, 14:03, 15:20, 16:43 and 18:14, with an extra 19:18 on Saturday and Sunday. The adult fare is the same on any day of the week: ₩27,700, or ₩13,800 for a child. The senior (65+) fare of ₩19,400 applies Monday to Friday only; Korail gives no KTX senior discount at weekends or on public holidays. On a holiday weekend, book as soon as the app opens; tickets now go on sale two months ahead.
The express bus takes about 2 hours 40 minutes from the Seoul Express Bus Terminal and 3 hours from Dong Seoul, per Andong city; fares rose 9% on 1 October, so check kobus.co.kr. For the same trade-off on the east coast, see our Gangneung and Sokcho guide.
From Andong Station to the village: bus 210
City bus 210 is the bus that goes to the village. It starts at Kyobo Life (교보생명) in the old downtown, calls at the Andong Terminal (안동터미널) stop beside the station and the bus terminal, and takes about 50 minutes to the village. The fare is ₩1,500 in cash. A transport card tapped on and off gives a free transfer within an hour.
The preservation society's timetable, dated 21 March 2022 and still the one it posts, lists 13 runs a day. Treat the times as a guide, not a promise. The times below are departures from downtown and departures back from Hahoe. The bus reaches the Andong Terminal stop a few minutes after leaving downtown, so check the live arrival on Kakao Map or Naver Map.
| Leaves downtown (교보생명) | Leaves Hahoe for Andong | Byeongsan Seowon? |
|---|---|---|
| 06:30 · 07:30 | 07:35 · 08:50 | — |
| 08:20 | 09:45 | Yes, leaves Byeongsan 09:30 |
| 09:20 · 10:20 | 10:30 · 11:30 | — |
| 11:00 | 12:40 | Yes, leaves Byeongsan 12:25 |

| 15:10 · 16:00 · 17:20 · 18:20 | 16:30 · 17:00 · 18:20 · 19:10 | — |
Andong city also lists Express 2 (급행2) from the station and terminal to Hahoe; it continues to Bongjeongsa temple. Check its times on Kakao Map.
Where you get off. Get off at the ticket office and car park area at the village entrance, not in the village itself. Buy your ticket there and ride the free shuttle into the village.
A taxi from the station costs far more than the bus but is the sensible choice for a group of three or four carrying luggage to a minbak.
Entry fee and hours, and why October counts as winter
| Ticket (as of October 2026) | Individual | Group of 30+ |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (19–64) | ₩5,000 | ₩4,000 |
| Youth (13–18) and uniformed service members | ₩2,500 | ₩2,000 |
| Child (7–12) | ₩1,500 | ₩1,200 |
| 6 and under with a guardian | Free | — |
| 65 and over | Free for Korean nationals only | — |
The 65+ exemption is written as "만65세 이상 내국인" (Korean nationals aged 65 and over). Foreign seniors pay the adult ₩5,000. Parking, the shuttle bus and the Hahoe World Mask Museum (하회세계탈박물관) are free with the ticket. Entry is free for everyone on 1 January, on Seollal day and on Chuseok day.
The village opens at 9 a.m. every day. The last entry is 5:30 p.m. from April to September and 4:30 p.m. from October to March; the preservation society and Andong city's tourism site both start winter in October. If you planned around 5:30 p.m. because the trees still look like summer, you are an hour late.
The mask dance: 2 p.m., and not on Mondays

Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori (하회별신굿탈놀이) is the village's mask dance drama. It is a satire in which a nobleman, a scholar and a lapsed monk are mocked by servants, a butcher and an old widow. The original Hahoe and Byeongsan masks, 13 in all, have been a National Treasure (국보) since 30 March 1964; the performers wear replicas. The drama became Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 69 in 1980.
The free resident show runs at the Hahoe Village mask dance hall (하회마을 탈춤공연장):
- March to December: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
- January and February: Saturday and Sunday only, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
- July to September: an extra evening show at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Gaemok ferry (개목나루) by Andong Dam, cancelled in rain. That season is over for 2026.
The society's last published count is 2,076 performances watched by 2,672,733 people from 1997 to 2016, of whom 178,073 were foreigners. The audience sits on tiered stone seating around a sand floor. Arrive a little early at weekends for a front-row seat, and dress warmly from November.
If the dance is why you are going, do not go on a Monday.

A day trip that works in winter hours
This plan assumes a Tuesday-to-Friday trip in October or November:
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| 06:27 | KTX-Eum 703 from Cheongnyangni, arriving Andong 08:30 |
| 09:20 | Bus 210 leaves downtown; board it at the Andong Terminal stop a few minutes later. Hahoe at about 10:10 |
| 10:15–13:30 | Village lanes, the Yangjindang (양진당) and Chunghyodang (충효당) head houses, the riverbank pines, lunch |
| 14:00–15:00 | Mask dance |
| 15:45 or 17:00 | Bus 210 back to the Andong Terminal stop |
| 16:43 or 18:14 | KTX-Eum to Cheongnyangni, arriving 18:49 or 20:15 |
A later start works too: train 705 at 09:18 arrives at 11:11, and the 12:30 bus gets you to Hahoe before 2 p.m. On weekdays, though, the 18:14 is the last KTX-Eum home. Miss it and the only later train is the slower 18:22 ITX-Maum. The 18:20 and 19:10 buses out of the village are too late for either.
If you want the village, the dance and some photos, a day is enough: Andong city estimates one to one and a half hours for the village itself.
Staying the night inside the village

The preservation society publishes a list of family minbak (민박), homestays in and around the village houses. It has 33 houses with 135 rooms between them; a few, such as Okyeonjeongsa (옥연정사) across the river, are outside the village core. The houses range from one-room riverside places to the great houses of the Pungsan Ryu clan (풍산 류씨): Yangjindang (양진당) lists 8 rooms and Chunghyodang (충효당) 5. One house, Haengsan Gotaek (행산고택), is marked as opening in the second half of 2026. The province's register of licensed hanok stays (31 December 2025) agrees: 30 stays with 138 rooms at Hahoe addresses, out of 188 in Andong.
How to book. The society's list gives a phone number for each house, and most take bookings by phone. Two, Hoeam Chodang (회암초당) and Subaekjae (수백재), are marked for Naver booking. If you don't speak Korean, ask your hotel in Seoul to call, or use the interpretation line at the village tourist office, 054-840-3803. The list publishes no prices, and we found no official price list, so we don't quote one. Ask for the total for the room, not per person, and ask whether breakfast is included.
The honest catch: bathrooms. Of the 33 entries, only Gamnamujip (감나무집) says it has a shower and toilet in the room. In many old houses the bathroom is a separate modern block across the yard, and you sleep on a yo (요) mattress on a heated ondol (온돌) floor. Ask two questions when you call: "방 안에 화장실 있어요?" (is there a toilet in the room?) and "침대 있어요?" (is there a bed?). For more on choosing a rural hanok stay, see our Choncance countryside-stay guide.
Why stay at all. After the 4:30 p.m. gate, day visitors go and the village goes quiet. You can walk the riverbank at dusk and see the cliff opposite at sunrise. You also get the 08:20 bus to Byeongsan Seowon, which leaves Byeongsan at 09:30. One house, Hadong Gotaek (하동고택), notes on the list that it serves jjimdak for dinner and a salted-mackerel set for breakfast.
Byeongsan Seowon, Buyongdae and the food

Byeongsan Seowon (병산서원) is a Joseon-era Confucian academy on the same river near Hahoe, famous for Mandaeru (만대루), an open pavilion facing a wall of cliffs across the water. It is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (5 p.m. in winter), and entry and parking are free. By bus it is awkward: on the 2022 timetable only the 08:20, 11:00 and 14:05 runs of bus 210 go there, and the last bus out leaves at 15:30. Many visitors combine it with Hahoe by taxi.
Buyongdae (부용대) is the cliff across the river from the village and gives the classic view of the river's loop. Ask at the tourist office how to get there that day, by road around the far bank or by the village's small ferry when it runs.
What to eat. The preservation society lists eight restaurants for the village, including Cheonggiwa Minsok Sikdang (청기와민속식당) and Buyongdae Sikdang (부용대식당). The Andong dishes to look for are:
- Andong jjimdak (안동찜닭): chicken braised in soy sauce with glass noodles and chilli. The famous version is in the jjimdak alley at Andong's old market downtown.
- Heotjesabap (헛제삿밥): "fake ancestral-rite rice", the bibimbap-like spread of a Confucian memorial table served without the ceremony.
- Andong salted mackerel (안동 간고등어): the inland town's famous preserved fish.
