Where to Stay in Yeosu, Korea: Expo Station vs Yi Sun-sin Square vs Dolsan, by KTX and Cable Car

EpicKor Editorial|

Last updated: 14 October 2026. Train times and fares are for 14–20 October 2026. Cable car fares and hours come from the operator's site, room rates from Yeosu City's 2026 register of declared room rates, and bus times from the city timetable revised on 2 October 2026. Sources are at the end. Dollar figures use about ₩1,450 to the US dollar.

Yeosu has three bases on one harbour. Yeosu EXPO Station (여수엑스포역) is where the KTX stops. Yi Sun-sin Square (이순신광장) is the old town and the night-sea strip. Dolsan (돌산) is the island across the bridge, where the cable car's top station sits.

Yeosu City publishes the number that settles it, in Korean only. In 2026, 200 lodging businesses filed their room rates in advance with the city, under a voluntary scheme the city widened ahead of this autumn's Island Expo. On EpicKor's count of that register, the cheapest room at a typical place costs about ₩60,000–70,000 a night ($41–48) near the station and in the old town on an autumn weekend. On Dolsan the typical figure is ₩245,000 ($169). Dolsan's registered places are mostly pool villas and resorts, not motels.

So the rule is short. Arriving by KTX for one or two nights, sleep near the station or in the old town. Book Dolsan only if you are driving or want a resort, and not on an October weekend.

The line that matters most: without a car, the station area and the old town are one short taxi ride apart. Pick the station if your train is early or late, and the old town if your evenings matter more.

The old town runs from Yi Sun-sin Square to the Geobukseon Bridge. Dolsan is everything south of the two bridges. The World Island Expo runs on Dolsan until 4 November, so October weekends fill early. EpicKor may earn a commission if you book through this Agoda link, at no extra cost to you. Getting there: the KTX to Yeosu EXPO

Yeosu EXPO Station is the end of the Jeolla line. Since the 1 September rail merger, the trains from Yongsan and from Suseo are all sold as Korail KTX. Fares came down on the same day (what changed). Some older English guides still quote ₩47,200 from Seoul. On the timetable data for this week, the standard adult fare from Yongsan is ₩45,400.

Route (14–20 Oct 2026)Trains a dayAdult fare, standard classTimeFirst / last

The last KTX from Yongsan, the 21:48, reaches Yeosu at 00:36. That alone is a reason to sleep near the station. Going home, the last train to Seoul leaves at 21:54. If you're doing Suncheon Bay as well, Suncheon is about 20 minutes up the line (our Suncheon guide has the times).

Base 1: Yeosu EXPO Station and Odongdo

The station sits beside the 2012 World Expo site (여수세계박람회장). The grounds, the Aqua Planet Yeosu aquarium, the lower (Jasan) station of the cable car, and the causeway to Odongdo (오동도) are all within about 15 minutes' walk (our estimate).

What you get:

  • The shortest walk from the train, for the 00:36 arrival or the 05:05 departure.
  • Odongdo. Per Yeosu City's tourism site, it's a 768 m breakwater walk, about 15 minutes, from the entrance car park to the island's camellia forest. You can also take the little Dongbaek train (동백열차).
  • The cable car's Jasan (자산) station, across from the Sono Calm hotel at 116 Odongdo-ro (오동도로 116). Ride over the water to Dolsan and back without moving hotels.
  • Cheap rooms. Most of the 16 registered places here are motels on the Gonghwa-dong (공화동) blocks behind the station. Their median cheapest autumn-weekend room is ₩67,500. The big exception is the Sono Calm Yeosu (소노캄 여수), 311 rooms on the Odongdo road. Its declared family-room rates start at ₩740,000, so check what your booking site actually charges.

What you give up: evenings. The area goes quiet after dinner; for the night sea and the stalls, take a taxi or bus to the old town.

Who should stay here: anyone arriving or leaving by KTX, families heading for the aquarium, and one-night stays.

Base 2: Yi Sun-sin Square and the old town

Yi Sun-sin Square (이순신광장) is the waterfront plaza in Jung-ang-dong (중앙동), below Jinnamgwan (진남관), the Joseon-era naval hall. West along the shore is Jonghwa-dong (종화동) and the Geobukseon Bridge (거북선대교). This is the Yeosu of the song "Yeosu Night Sea" (여수 밤바다): lights on the water, the cable-car cabins overhead, and the stalls under the bridge.

The Romantic Pocha (낭만포차) is the reason many people stay here. Yeosu City runs it as 18 licensed stalls in the plaza under the Geobukseon Bridge (102 Hamel-ro, 하멜로 102), open 18:00 to 01:00 all year. Card payment is the rule. The stalls close on the first Wednesday of each month, except in April to June and August to October. They also close when a weather advisory or warning (wind, rain, snow or cold) is in force.

What you get:

  • Everything after dark within a 15-minute walk (our estimate): the square, the stalls, the bridge lights and the seafood restaurants.
  • Cheap, plain rooms. On the city register, the old-town blocks (Gyo-dong, Gwangmu-dong, Chungmu-dong, Seogyo-dong) have 12 places, with a median cheapest autumn-weekend room of ₩60,000. Next door, Bongsan-dong (봉산동), the crab-rice street by the Dolsan Bridge, adds 19 more motels at ₩70,000.
  • The Dolsan bus. Routes 111 and 111-1 stop at Jinnamgwan, just above Yi Sun-sin Square, on their way to Dolsan and Hyangiram.

What you give up:

  • Quiet. The stalls run to 01:00, and weekends are loud.
  • A short walk to the train. It's about 2.5 km to the station (our estimate). Take a taxi with luggage, or bus 2, which runs between the Seo-si-jang (서시장) area and Yeosu EXPO Station every 20–30 minutes on weekdays.

Who should stay here: couples and friends who came for the night sea, and anyone staying two nights or more.

Base 3: Dolsan

Dolsan (돌산) is the large island joined to the city by the Dolsan Bridge (돌산대교) and the Geobukseon Bridge. The near end, around Dolsan Park (돌산공원), has the cable car's top station, the classic view back over the harbour, and a strip of hotels and pensions on the coast road. Further south are pool villas, beaches and, at the very tip, Hyangiram.

What you get:

  • Space and pools. Of the 50 Dolsan places on the city register, 20 are pool villas, resorts or pensions by name. That is why the median cheapest autumn-weekend room is ₩245,000, and the top kids' pool villas declare ₩1,000,000 or more.
  • The cable car's Dolsan station (돌산로 3600-1), with a 250-space public car park: first hour free, then ₩200 per 10 minutes.
  • A head start for Hyangiram, roughly 25–30 km south at the tip of the island (our estimate).

What you give up:

  • Easy transport. Buses run, but most resorts are spread along coast roads. Without a car you'll take a taxi for dinner.
  • October weekends. The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo (여수세계섬박람회) has its main venue on Dolsan, at Jinmo (진모지구), until 4 November. The organisers warn that Dolsan's roads are partly single-lane. On weekends and holidays, getting in or out by car can take one to two hours or more. On the first day of the Hangul Day long weekend, about 120,000 people came, and the Expo had passed one million visitors by 10 October.

Who should stay here: drivers, families who want a pool villa, and anyone after a resort night, ideally after the Expo closes on 4 November.

The cable car: fares and the two stations

The Yeosu Maritime Cable Car (여수해상케이블카) is a 1.5 km line over the sea between Jasan Park, by the Expo station, and Dolsan Park. It runs 50 cabins: 35 standard and 15 "crystal" cabins with glass floors. You can board and buy tickets at either end.

Ticket (adult)Round tripOne way
Standard cabin (8 per cabin)₩17,000 ($12)₩14,000
Crystal cabin, glass floor (6 per cabin)₩24,000 ($17)₩19,000
Child (36 months to primary school), standard / crystal₩12,000 / ₩19,000₩9,000 / ₩14,000
Premium cabin, no queue, whole cabin₩350,000 per cabin
  • There are no reservations. Tickets are sold on the day only, at the counter (cash or card) or at machines (card only). Vouchers bought online can't be used the same day; they work from the next day.
  • Hours on 14 October 2026: 09:30–21:30. On 21 October the line opens at 14:00 for a safety inspection.
  • No suitcases, strollers or hiking poles in the crystal cabins, because they can damage the glass floor. Food and drink aren't allowed on board. If you're checking out, leave your bag at the hotel first.

What the city's room-rate register shows

Yeosu invited lodging businesses to file their prices in advance for 2026, to curb price-gouging around the Island Expo. Each place lists a weekday and weekend price for the off-season, the autumn tourist season (1 September–30 October) and the summer peak. In 2026 the register covers 200 places: 7 hotels and condos, 112 motels and inns, 11 residence hotels, 59 hostels and 11 homestays.

EpicKor sorted the places with room-by-room rates by address, then took each place's cheapest room:

Area (by registered address)PlacesMedian cheapest room, autumn weekdayMedian cheapest room, autumn weekend
Expo station and Odongdo road16₩50,000₩67,500
Old town, Yi Sun-sin Square side12₩50,000₩60,000
Bongsan-dong, by the Dolsan Bridge19₩55,000₩70,000
Dolsan (excluding the Hyangiram village)50₩182,500₩245,000
Hyangiram village (향일암로)4₩50,000₩55,000
Yeocheon and City Hall, the new town50₩60,000₩70,000
Airport side (Yulchon, Sora, Hwayang)6₩55,000₩55,000

How to use it: the register shows what each area is made of, not what you will pay. Joining was voluntary, and booking-site prices differ. Two things are clear. The station area and the old town are motel country, at about $40–50 a night. Dolsan is resort country, at three to four times that. Yeocheon, the newer city-hall district, is cheap too, but it's far from the sea and the sights.

Hyangiram and 1 January

Hyangiram (향일암), the cliffside hermitage at the southern tip of Dolsan, is Yeosu's famous sunrise spot. Our New Year sunrise guide left it out, so here it is. By our calculation, the sun rises there at about 07:35 on 1 January 2027. We used the NOAA solar formula, which gives KASI's published 07:31 for Ganjeolgot. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (한국천문연구원) usually publishes its official New Year list in December.

Getting there by bus: routes 111 and 111-1 run from the Mipyeong (미평) depot through the old town and over the Dolsan Bridge to the terminus at 임포(향일암). There are 25 runs a day, every 30–80 minutes. Per the city's timetable, the first five runs from Mipyeong, from 04:30, go by way of Yeosu EXPO Station. The last bus back from Hyangiram leaves at 21:40. Route 116 adds a handful of runs a day. From the old town it's roughly 50 minutes to an hour (our estimate). From the bus stop, allow about 30 minutes to climb up through the rock gates.

Where to sleep for it: for an ordinary day trip, stay in the old town and take the 111. For the New Year sunrise, the 04:30 run gets you there well before dawn. If you'd rather not ride a bus at 04:30, sleep in the Hyangiram village itself: the register lists four places on Hyangiram-ro. Yeosu City runs a Hyangiram Sunrise Festival (향일암 일출제). As of 14 October, its 2027 programme, shuttle buses and road closures haven't been announced.

The World Island Expo, until 4 November

Before 4 November, the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo shapes your stay more than anything else. Its main venue is on Dolsan (196 Gangnam Haean-ro, 돌산읍 강남해안로 196). Satellite sites are at the old Expo grounds by the station and on the islands of Gaedo and Geumodo.

  • Tickets: adults ₩15,000 ($10), teenagers ₩9,000, children ₩6,000. A night ticket is ₩8,000 for adults, with entry from 17:00 to 20:00. A family ticket for four is ₩32,000. Tickets are sold on site and through NOL Ticket (Interpark), which has English, Japanese and Chinese pages, and Trip.com.
  • Buses are free toward Dolsan and the venue for the length of the Expo: tap your card and it charges ₩0. Free shuttles also run from park-and-ride car parks on the edge of the city.
  • Don't drive onto Dolsan on a weekend (see Base 3 for the organisers' warning).

In practice, a station-area or old-town room plus a free bus beats a Dolsan room with a car.

Practical notes before you book

  • Yeosu city buses are cash-free. Since 1 January 2026, they take transit cards only: ₩1,600 ($1.10) for adults. Teenagers and children who register a youth card pay ₩100. Have a T-money or other Korean transit card loaded before you arrive.
  • Ask for stops in Korean: 여수엑스포역 (the station), 진남관 (for the square), 임포(향일암) (Hyangiram).
