Buying a Long Padded Coat (롱패딩) in Korea, Winter 2026: Real Prices from ₩49,900 to ₩469,000, Duck vs Goose Labels, Tax Refund and When You Actually Need One
Last updated: 3 October 2026. Prices on this page were read from the brands' own stores (The North Face Korea, SPAO, Uniqlo Korea) and from Musinsa product pages on 3 October 2026, with the down-and-feather line taken from each product's legal information notice. Dollar figures use ₩1,350 to the dollar (the European Central Bank's reference rate on 2 October 2026 was ₩1,348). Korean coat prices move every week from October to February, so treat them as a snapshot, not a quote.
If you land in Korea between December and February, you will see the coat before you see anything else: the knee-length or ankle-length padded parka Koreans call long padding (롱패딩, long paeding). Our long padding story explains why the whole country wears one, and almost always in black. This page answers what comes next for a visitor: do you need one, what it costs this winter, what the label says, where to buy, and what the tax refund is worth.
The short version: a long padding in Korea costs anything from ₩49,900 (about $37) for a polyester-filled SPA coat on sale to ₩329,000 (about $244) for a The North Face Korea down coat at its current discount, and the label matters more than the logo. In December 2025 the Korea Consumer Agency found that 5 of 24 "goose down" coats it bought online did not contain enough goose to be called that.

Quick Guide: Buying a Long Padding in Korea, Winter 2026
| Question | Answer (as of October 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Do I need one? | December to February, yes, if you will be outdoors for long. Seoul's average daily high is 4.2°C in December and 2.1°C in January; November's average high is 11.9°C, and most of the month does not need one | KMA 1991–2020 normals |
| Cheapest long padding | ₩49,900 (SPAO Basic Long Padding, sale price; ₩99,900 list). Filling is polyester, not down | SPAO official store |
| Cheapest real down long coats we found | Women's: Uniqlo Seamless Down Long Coat, ₩199,000, 90% down / 10% feather. Men's: Musinsa Standard Long Down Bench Parka, ₩218,390 with the current coupon (₩229,900 list), duck down 80/20 | Uniqlo Korea, Musinsa product notice |
| Outdoor brands (North Face, Discovery, K2) | List prices ₩439,000 to ₩469,000; actually selling at ₩279,000 to ₩329,000 after 30–40% cuts | Brand stores, Musinsa |
| Duck or goose? | Read the 충전재 (filling) line: 오리 = duck, 거위 = goose. A "goose down" label needs at least 80% goose; "down" needs at least 75% down clusters | Korea Consumer Agency, Dec 2025 |
| Tax refund | From ₩15,000 on one receipt; instant refund at the till for purchases under ₩1,000,000. Expect roughly 5–8% back, not the full 10% VAT | VAT special-case rules for tourists, 2024 revision |
| Cheapest time | Mid to late November: Musinsa's 2025 winter Black Friday ran 16–26 November, online and in its stores | Musinsa newsroom |
| Korean sizes | Chest-number sizes: 95 = M, 100 = L, 105 = XL at The North Face Korea | The North Face Korea size list |
If you already own one good insulated coat, you may not need to buy anything big in Korea at all. What most visitors lack is not the coat but the layer under it, which is how Koreans make a mid-weight coat work on a −5°C morning (the layering system is in our long padding story).
Smartwool Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Crew — the thin layer that does the work under any coat Merino stays warm on a −5°C platform and does not turn clammy when you walk into a 25°C café, which is the Seoul winter in one sentence; it comes in men's and women's cuts. As an Amazon Associate, EpicKor earns from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
See the Smartwool merino base layer on AmazonDo You Actually Need a Long Padding? Seoul, Month by Month
The honest answer depends on the month. The Korea Meteorological Administration's 1991–2020 climate normals for Seoul:
| Month | Average daily high | Average daily low | Record low (all-time) | Snowy days | Long padding? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 11.9°C | 3.5°C | −11.9°C | 2.3 | Not usually; a short down jacket or wool coat is enough until the last week |
| December | 4.2°C | −3.4°C | −23.1°C | 6.4 | Yes, from mid-month or for any evening outdoors |
| January | 2.1°C | −5.5°C | −22.5°C | 7.1 | Yes. This is the month the coat was invented for |
| February | 5.1°C | −3.2°C | −19.6°C | 5.1 | Early February yes; by late February many Koreans switch back to short jackets |
The averages hide the cold snaps: the record lows above show what a bad week can do, and those weeks are when the long coat earns its money, because it covers the thighs a hip-length jacket leaves in the wind. Seoul's normal first-snow date is 20 November (city-by-city dates in our first-snow guide).
So a visitor arriving in the first half of November should not buy a long padding on the first day. One arriving for the Seoul Lantern Festival and Winter Festa in late December, or for a ski trip in January, probably should, unless they already own a coat rated for −10°C.

These are the prices we read on 3 October 2026, with the filling exactly as each product's legal notice states it. Korean outerwear is sold at a published list price (정가) and then almost immediately discounted, so we give both. Dollar figures are rounded at ₩1,350.

Three things are worth knowing before you walk into a shop.
The list price is not the price. Every outdoor-brand long coat we checked was already 30–40% below its list price at the start of October, before the season had properly begun. K2's 2026-season Carpa was listed at ₩465,000 and selling for ₩279,000. Never pay the number on the tag in a Korean outdoor store without asking whether a discount (할인, harin) applies.
"Long padding" is not the same as "long down". The two cheapest coats in the table are filled with polyester. That is legal, because the word padding (패딩) only means "padded", and polyester coats are lighter on the wallet and easier to wash. But they are bulkier for the same warmth, and they are not what the outdoor brands sell. If the label says 폴리에스터 100% next to 충전재, it is a synthetic coat whatever the shop calls it.
The North Face Korea's long coat on sale in its own store is last season's model. The Challenge Air coat is labelled 25 F/W, which is one reason the discount is already there.

Reading the Label: Duck, Goose, 80/20 and the Korean Words
Korean clothing carries a sewn-in quality label (품질표시), and online stores must repeat it in a product-information notice. For a down coat, the line that matters starts with 충전재 (chungjeonjae, filling). A typical one reads 충전재: 우모(오리) 솜털 80%, 깃털 20%, which means "filling: waterfowl (duck), down 80%, feather 20%".
| Korean on the label | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 충전재 | chungjeonjae | Filling |
| 솜털 | somteol | Down clusters (the warm part) |
| 깃털 | gitteol | Feathers (the cheaper, flatter part) |
| 오리 / 덕다운 | ori / deok daun | Duck / duck down |
| 거위 / 구스다운 | geowi / guseu daun | Goose / goose down |
| 폴리에스터 | polieseuteo | Polyester (a synthetic fill if it appears after 충전재) |
| 재생다운 / 리사이클 다운 | jaesaeng daun | Recycled down |
| 필파워 (FP) | pilpawo | Fill power: how much the down lofts; 600 and up is good, 700 and up is premium |
The thresholds, as the Korea Consumer Agency (한국소비자원) stated them when it published its test in December 2025: a product may be sold as down only if at least 75% of the filling is down clusters, and as goose down only if at least 80% of the down is goose.
Why it matters: that December 2025 test checked 24 coats sold as "goose down" for under ₩300,000 on four fashion platforms (W Concept, Musinsa, Ably and Zigzag). Five did not meet the goose standard, one of them at 6.6% goose. Two more were advertised as goose online but labelled duck on the coat itself, with 1.9% and 4.7% goose. All eight coats bought on Musinsa passed. The agency's advice was to check the sewn-in label as soon as the coat arrives, because the web page and the coat can disagree.
Big brands were not immune. On 3 December 2025 The North Face Korea apologised after buyers found that some colours of its 1996 Retro Nuptse jacket, sold on Musinsa as 80/20 goose down, contained recycled down. The company audited every down product in every channel, found 13 products with the filling misstated (goose on the page, recycled or duck down inside), corrected them and offered refunds. The lesson for a visitor is simple: in a shop, turn the coat inside out and read the label; do not trust the hang tag or the web page alone.
Duck versus goose matters less than people think: an honest 80/20 duck coat beats a mislabelled "goose" one, and every outdoor-brand coat in our table except Discovery's uses duck.

Where to Buy a Long Padding in Seoul
- Musinsa stores. Musinsa Standard, the platform's own label, ran 41 stores in Korea by mid-2026, and the biggest Musinsa building is Musinsa Megastore Seongsu (무신사 메가스토어 성수) at 성수이로 62, opened in April 2026 and open from 11:00 (details in our K-fashion flagship guide). This is where you can try a ₩218,390 bench parka and a ₩300,000 outdoor-brand coat on the same afternoon.
- SPA stores (SPAO, Uniqlo). The cheapest route, and the one most likely to stock S to XL in black on any given day. Read the filling line: SPAO's ₩49,900 coat is polyester, Uniqlo's ₩199,000 long coat is 90/10 down.
- Outdoor-brand stores and department stores. The North Face, Discovery, K2, Eider, National Geographic and Nepa all have street stores and department-store floors. Department stores (Lotte, Shinsegae, Hyundai) have tax-refund desks; ask on the floor where yours is.
- Outlets, for last season's coat. Mario Outlet (마리오아울렛) in Gasan, near Gasan Digital Complex station on Lines 1 and 7, has advertised outdoor-brand sales with K2, The North Face and Nepa on its website, and opens 10:30–21:00 (to 21:30 Friday to Sunday). Last winter's colour is often cheaper than this winter's sale price.
When to buy: if you can wait, the deepest discounts arrive in mid to late November. Musinsa's winter Black Friday in 2025 ran from 16 to 26 November, online and in its stores, and the outdoor brands discount at the same time. By late January the remaining stock is often cheaper still, but sizes and black are the first things to go.
Pay by card if you can: the chains above take foreign cards at the till, and our Korea payment guide covers which cards work where and the few places that still balk.
Tax Refund on a Coat in Korea
A coat is exactly the kind of purchase the tourist tax refund was designed for. The rules for 2026, unchanged since the 1 January 2024 revision:
- The minimum is ₩15,000 on one receipt in one tax-free shop. Every coat in our table clears it.
- Instant refund (즉시환급) at the till covers purchases under ₩1,000,000 each, up to ₩5,000,000 per trip. Show your physical passport before you pay.
- You must be a foreign visitor staying under six months, and take the goods out of Korea within three months.
- You get back roughly 5–8% of the price, not the full 10% VAT, because the refund operator keeps a fee and the refund is set by price bracket. On a ₩307,300 coat that is very roughly ₩15,000 to ₩25,000, about $11 to $18 (an estimate from that range, not a quote).
Not every shop is a registered tax-free shop; look for the TAX FREE sign or ask 택스 리펀 돼요? (taekseu ripeon dwaeyo?, "Is tax refund possible?") before paying. If you get a paper slip instead of an instant refund, keep the coat with you rather than in checked luggage, in case customs asks to see it. The full rules, airport kiosks and the store-by-store detail are in our Korea tax refund guide.
Korean Sizes: Chest Numbers, Not Letters
Korean outdoor brands size by chest number. The North Face Korea's own list for the Challenge Air coat: 085 = XS, 090 = S, 095 = M, 100 = L, 105 = XL, 110 = XXL, 115 = XXXL. Discovery's Lester G comes in 90 to 115 for men and 90 to 105 for women, K2's Carpa in 95 to 120.
Long paddings are cut roomy on purpose, to go over a knit, so try one with what you will wear under it; for tall visitors the sleeves are the usual problem, not the chest. And length is a choice: The North Face lists its Challenge Air coat at 107–117 cm depending on size, so how far down it reaches depends on your height. Stand in it in front of a mirror: if the hem stops above the knee, it will not do the one job a long padding is for.
Getting a Long Padding Home
The part nobody mentions until the airport: a long down coat is the bulkiest thing you will buy in Korea. Down compresses well, so the usual trick is to wear it onto the plane, or squeeze it into a compression bag for the suitcase. A polyester-filled coat compresses much less, which is another reason the cheap one can cost you a bag fee.
Gonex compression packing cubes, 4-piece — the zip that turns a down coat into a third of a suitcase A long down coat squeezes to a fraction of its size in a compression cube for the flight home, then lofts back within a day of unpacking; a synthetic coat squeezes far less. - You leave before December. With an 11.9°C average high in November, you will carry the coat more than wear it.
- You live somewhere warm. A ₩300,000 coat worn for one week is the most expensive item of the trip. A hip-length down jacket plus a thermal base layer handles most of a Seoul winter for less, and packs smaller.
- You only want the look. If the point is the black long silhouette rather than the warmth, the ₩49,900 polyester coat is honest about what it is. Do not pay down prices for it.
- The label and the page disagree. Walk away, or ask for the coat with the right label. That was the whole lesson of the 2025 tests.
- One purchase goes over ₩1,000,000. Above that, the till cannot refund instantly, and you will be queuing at the airport kiosk with your slip.
Whatever you buy, do what Koreans do: put a hot pack (핫팩) in each pocket. They cost about ₩1,000 in convenience stores; prices, the 70°C rule and which ones can fly are in our Korean hot pack guide.
