Where to Buy Luggage in Seoul: Namdaemun, Real Prices, and When Not to Bother

Nobody plans this trip. You arrive with one suitcase, you spend a week in Olive Young and Daiso and a stationery shop in Hongdae, and three days before your flight you are sitting on your case trying to close it.

The Korean answer is 남대문시장 (Namdaemun Market), where a hard-shell case costs a fraction of what it does at home. That part is true and every guide says it.

What those guides leave out is the part that actually ruins the trip: the underground arcade closes on the second and fourth Sunday of the month, the bag shops shut completely for Chuseok and Lunar New Year, and a ₩40,000 case that weighs 5kg can cost you more in airline excess than you saved.

The Short Answer

Namdaemun is not one place, and that is why people get lost

Visitors say "Namdaemun" as though it is a shop. It is a district of separate buildings, each with its own trade, and the bags are not in the same building as the clothes or the kitchenware.

The market sits at Hoehyeon Station (회현역), Line 4, Exit 5. Come up, and the market is immediately in front of you — but the specific buildings are a few minutes further in, down the alleys.

A concrete example, so you know what a real address here looks like. 나인가방 (Nine Bags) sells suitcases, bags and handbags at 대도종합상가 (Daedo General Shopping Mall), Building D, 1st floor, unit 26, at 남대문시장4길 9. It opens 08:30 to 20:00 and, like most of the market, closes for Seollal and Chuseok. That is the shape of every shop here: a building, a letter, a floor, a number.

The two underground arcades, and which one is which

English guides often send people to "the underground shopping arcade at Myeongdong Station" for luggage. It is worth being precise, because these are two different city-run arcades with different opening rules.

Two things follow from that table. The Myeongdong arcade runs between Lotte Department Store's main branch and Myeongdong street and its passage is open 24 hours, which makes it a useful shortcut regardless. And neither arcade lists bags as its main trade in the city's own directory — the luggage concentration is in the market buildings above ground, not underground.

If you are going on a Sunday, check which Sunday it is. The second and fourth are the ones that will waste your afternoon.

What it actually costs — and where our number stops

Here is the part we can and cannot verify, stated plainly.

What we verified: a suitcase from a Korean online retailer, priced on 14 August 2026, runs ₩75,500 to ₩175,300 for a 24-inch and ₩93,150 to ₩149,427 for a 28-inch across Danawa, Gmarket and SSG listings. That is your baseline — it is what a Korean pays without going anywhere.

What we did not verify: the Namdaemun price. English guides consistently report ₩30,000 to ₩100,000, and that is plausible for an unbranded case, but we have no first-hand price board from this month and Korean sources do not publish one. Treat it as a reported range and expect to haggle.

So the honest framing is not "Namdaemun is cheap." It is: Namdaemun is roughly half the online price for an unbranded case, and the online price is already low by international standards. If you were expecting ₩10,000, that is not this market.

When you should not buy a suitcase here

This section is the reason to read a guide rather than a shop list.

If your allowance is tight, weight beats price. A cheap hard case can weigh 4.5-5.5kg empty against 2.5-3.5kg for a light branded one. On a 23kg economy allowance that difference is two or three kilograms of things you cannot bring home. Ask the shop for the empty weight before you talk about price — that is the number that matters, and shops here will tell you.

The arithmetic, with the actual numbers

This is where the "cheap suitcase" logic falls apart, so it is worth doing properly.

Read the Korean Air row again. Going one kilogram over costs ₩75,000 — comfortably more than the suitcase you just bought at Namdaemun. Asiana's ₩50,000 is the same story with a smaller number.

And Jin Air's allowance is 15kg, not 23kg. If you are flying a Korean budget carrier home, you have eight fewer kilograms than you think, and a 5kg empty case has taken a third of what is left before you pack anything.

So the calculation is not "how cheap is the case." It is: empty weight of case + what I am carrying against my allowance, and then the excess band if that goes over. A ₩90,000 case that weighs 2.8kg can be the cheaper purchase than a ₩40,000 case that weighs 5.2kg, and it is not close.

Buy the scale, weigh it in the hotel, and settle this before you get to Incheon — because the desk is not where you want to be discovering it.

If it is only a few kilos, ship instead. Korea Post's international parcel service will often move a box of snacks and cosmetics for less than a new case plus its own weight penalty. Work out the total before you commit.

Wheels and handles are where cheap cases die. They fail on the first airport transfer, not on the fifth trip. If you are checking it once and retiring it, fine. If you plan to keep using it, the online mid-range is a better buy than the market bottom.

The alternatives, briefly

• Daiso sells soft duffels and cabin-size bags for very little. Not durable, perfectly adequate for one flight home.
• The Myeongdong arcade and street shops are more used to foreign customers and more likely to have English, at a modest premium.
• Online (Coupang, Gmarket) works if you have a Korean address and three days. Most visitors do not.
• Your hotel may hold a bag while you shop, which sometimes removes the problem entirely.

A: Not according to the city's own directory, which lists eyeglasses and clothing as its main trade across 61 shops. It is a useful 24-hour passage between Lotte's main store and Myeongdong street, but the luggage concentration is in the Namdaemun market buildings.

Q: Can I claim tax refund on a suitcase?

A: Only at shops registered for tax-free sales, which small market stalls generally are not. Department stores and larger retailers are. Since 1 January 2026 the immediate in-store refund limit is ₩1,000,000 per purchase, so a suitcase sits comfortably inside it — if the shop participates.

Q: Should I just ship my things home instead?

A: Often yes, if the overflow is a few kilograms of snacks and cosmetics. Compare the cost of a case plus its own empty weight against a Korea Post parcel before you buy.

Q: How much is excess baggage flying out of Korea?

A: On Korean Air, going from 23kg into the 24-28kg band costs ₩75,000. Asiana charges ₩50,000 for the same band. Jeju Air sells extra allowance by piece in advance but charges per kilogram at the airport, and Jin Air's free international economy allowance is only 15kg. Those figures are why the empty weight of the case matters more than its price.

Q: Do market shops speak English?

A: Some, and less than in Myeongdong. Bags and cases are an easy transaction without much language — you are pointing, checking wheels, and agreeing a number. Have a calculator app open; that is how the number gets agreed here.

The rule worth remembering

Ask for the empty weight before you ask for the price. Everything else about buying a suitcase in Seoul — which alley, which building, which Sunday — is logistics you can work around. The weight is the only number that follows you to the check-in desk.
