Korea's Spam Gift Sets Explained: What the Numbers Mean and Which One to Buy

Walk into a Korean department store in the four weeks before Chuseok and you will find an entire floor given over to gift boxes. Dried seaweed. Hanwoo beef. Red ginseng. Pears the size of a grapefruit, individually wrapped like jewellery.

And Spam. Stacked in navy presentation boxes, sold by the dozen, at prices that make Western visitors assume someone is playing a joke.

Nobody is joking. Canned ham is one of the most reliably welcome gifts in Korea, and CJ CheilJedang — which makes Spam under licence here — has held the number-one position in processed-food holiday gift sets for years. The company's own figures put roughly 60% of annual Spam revenue in the two holiday gift seasons.

The part nobody explains in English is how to actually buy one, because they are not sold by name. They are sold by number.

The Short Answer

Why canned ham, and why it isn't a joke here

The short version is the Korean War. American military rations put canned meat into a country where protein was scarce and expensive, and it arrived attached to the most powerful army in the world. What was cheap in Ohio was luxurious in Seoul, and unusually for a wartime association, the status stuck.

Spam has been made in Korea by CJ CheilJedang since 1987. Korea is now the second-largest Spam market on earth after the United States, and cumulative domestic sales have passed 1.9 billion cans — counted in 200g-can equivalents — for more than ₩4 trillion in lifetime revenue. It is a normal ingredient in budae jjigae, kimbap, fried rice and the packed lunch that turns up in every other K-drama.

The holiday gift-set market it leads is worth over ₩1 trillion a year on its own, and Spam has topped the processed-food share of it for years running.

What makes the gift work is not the ham. It is the shelf life and the shareability. A box of Spam is a gift that a household of any size can absorb, that will not go off, and whose value is legible at a glance — which is exactly what you want when you are giving something to your parents' neighbour, your team lead, or a client.

The numbers are a size code, and it runs backwards

This is the part that no English-language article gets to, and it is the only thing you need in order to shop.

The number is a size rank, and the smaller the number, the bigger the box. 1호 is the largest set. 12호 is one of the smallest. It is not a quality grade, and there is no "premium 1호" in the sense a Western shopper would assume — the ham inside every one of these boxes is identical 스팸 클래식.

Read the last column. The ladder is perfectly consistent: the bigger the box, the cheaper the ham inside it. 1호 works out about 18% cheaper per gram than 12호. If you are buying Spam to eat rather than to give, the largest box is simply the best deal, and that is true every year because the sizes are engineered as price points rather than as recipes.

The trap in that photograph is worth naming. 3호 and 6호 both contain twelve cans. 3호 holds 3,240g, 6호 holds 2,400g — a 35% difference for the same headline count. If you are comparing two boxes on a shelf, count the grams printed on the cans, not the cans.

The price on the box is fiction

Every set in the range is discounted, and not modestly. On CJ's own store on 13 August 2026, the discounts ran from 20% to 51%, with the mainstream sets clustered around 40-45% off.

That is not a sale you have caught by luck. It is how this category is priced: the number printed on the box is the 가격표 (list price) that makes the gift look expensive when the recipient reads it, and the transaction price is something else entirely. Both numbers are doing a job.

What this means practically: never pay the listed price, and never assume a discount you see is unusually good. Compare the same 호 across CJ's own store, Coupang, the big supermarket chains and the department stores, and expect the spread to be small. If you find a set at full list price, you are in the wrong shop.

복합 means the box is not all Spam

Alongside the numbered sets there is a second family with 복합 (bokhap, "combined") in the name — 복합 특호, 복합 O-G호, 복합 K-2호, 복합 Y호 and others. These look more impressive and often cost more, and they contain less ham.

The bottles are CJ's own 백설 (Beksul) pantry line: 카놀라유 (canola oil), 포도씨유 (grapeseed oil), 요리올리고당 (cooking oligosaccharide syrup, a standard Korean sweetener), plus herb salt and pepper grinders. They are perfectly good products and Korean households use all of them.

But understand what you are buying. A 복합 set is a hamper, not a bigger box of Spam. If the recipient wanted ham, a plain 호 set at the same price gives them substantially more of it. If the recipient is a household that actually cooks, the oils get used and the set is arguably the better gift. That is a judgement about the person, not about value — and it is exactly the calculation Korean buyers are making in that aisle.

There is also a growing collaboration range — a KakaoTalk edition of 12호, a "super moon" edition, a gold-bar edition, and co-branded boxes with the Spanish tuna brand Calvo. These are gift-presentation plays. Price them per gram like anything else.

The yellow cap is gone, and only from the gift sets

For decades the Korean Spam can wore a yellow plastic lid, and Korean households famously kept them — for half-used cans, for organising small things, for no reason at all.

CJ began removing it in 2020, starting with two Chuseok gift sets, after the cap became a symbol of unnecessary plastic in Korea's environmental debate. The cap was originally there to prevent damage in transit, not to reseal anything. Look at the boxes above and you will see the tan band reading NO CAP FOR US — 환경을 생각하여 스팸캡을 제거하였습니다, "we removed the Spam cap out of environmental consideration."

Here is the detail that matters if you want one. The removal is complete across gift sets, but single cans sold on supermarket and convenience-store shelves still have the yellow cap, because loose stock is more likely to get knocked about. So the famous lid is now a thing you get from buying one can at a CU, not from buying the ₩62,643 presentation box.

Should you actually buy one?

Straight answer: as a souvenir, no.

• Weight. 1호 is over four kilograms before packaging. That is a meaningful chunk of a 23kg allowance spent on a product sold in most countries.
• Customs. Canned meat is a processed pork product, and rules vary sharply by destination. Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan are strict about pork; the EU restricts meat products from outside the bloc. Check your own country's rules before you buy rather than at the airport.
• Availability. It is Spam. The Korean version is made to the same licence and tastes the same.

When it is genuinely a good buy:

• You live in Korea, or are staying long enough to eat it. The per-gram maths above is real, and holiday season is the cheapest canned ham gets all year.
• You are giving a gift to a Korean host, colleague or family. Then it is not a novelty at all — it is a correct, conventional, well-received choice, and 8호 or 6호 is the normal register for someone outside your family.
• You want to see the aisle. Spend twenty minutes in the basement food hall of Lotte or Shinsegae in early September. The gift floor is one of the most revealing things about Korean social life you can look at for free.
