Chuncheon Day Trip from Seoul, Korea: ITX Fares, Times and Dakgalbi

EpicKor Editorial|

Last updated: 1 November 2026. Train times and fares are from Korail's own ITX-Cheongchun and Gyeongchun Line timetables (in force since 28 February 2026) and its fare tables. Bus times are from the national terminal data on data.go.kr, updated 23 October–1 November. Skywalk, Gongjicheon and Gugok Falls details are from the Chuncheon city tourism pages. All of these were read on 1 November 2026. Check your train in the Korail Talk app (코레일톡) before you go.

A Chuncheon day trip from Seoul takes about an hour each way and costs ₩8,600. That is the fare for the ITX-Cheongchun (ITX-청춘) from Cheongnyangni (청량리) to Chuncheon (춘천), and the train takes 55 to 67 minutes. From Yongsan it is ₩9,800 and 73 to 86 minutes. If you have more time than money, the Gyeongchun Line subway (경춘선) costs ₩3,250 on a T-money card from Sangbong and takes about 1 hour 25. A bus from Dong Seoul costs ₩9,400 and takes about 1 hour 13. On weekdays the first ITX reaches Chuncheon at 06:53, and the last one back leaves at 22:14.

Chuncheon (춘천) is the capital of Gangwon Province, on the lakes formed where the Soyang River (소양강) meets the Bukhan River. It is known in Korea for one dish: dakgalbi (닭갈비), chicken and vegetables stir-fried in a red sauce on a big iron pan at your table.

Chuncheon hotels on Agoda — if one day is not enough A night near Chuncheon or Namchuncheon Station puts you at the Skywalk when it opens at 10:00, with time left for Gugok Falls near Gangchon, two stops back toward Seoul. It also makes a late dakgalbi dinner easy, without watching the clock for the 22:14 train. EpicKor may earn a commission if you book through this Agoda link, at no extra cost to you. Seoul to Chuncheon: ITX, subway or bus?

Three ways run all day. The right one depends on where you are staying in Seoul and how much time you want to spend on the way.

Our pick: the ITX from Cheongnyangni. It is ₩800 cheaper than the Dong Seoul bus, it drops you at a railway station inside the city, and traffic cannot delay it. Take the subway if you want to stop at Gangchon (강촌) for Gugok Falls. Only a few ITX trains stop there, but every subway train does.

ITX-Cheongchun: fares, first and last trains

The ITX-Cheongchun is Korail's double-decker express on the Gyeongchun Line. It runs from Yongsan through Cheongnyangni, Sangbong (some trains), Gapyeong, Gangchon (a few trains), Namchuncheon (남춘천) and ends at Chuncheon. The timetable below has been in force since 28 February 2026.

Weekdays (18 each way)Weekends and holidays (26 each way)
First train to ChuncheonYongsan 05:38 (Cheongnyangni 05:55) → 06:53Yongsan 06:15 → 07:32
Last train to ChuncheonYongsan 22:50 (Cheongnyangni 23:07) → 00:04Yongsan 22:32 → 23:46
First train backChuncheon 06:07 → Yongsan 07:32Chuncheon 06:06 → Yongsan 07:25
Last train backChuncheon 22:14 → Cheongnyangni 23:12, Yongsan 23:28Chuncheon 22:13 → Yongsan 23:30

Weekday evening trains back from Chuncheon: 18:15 (Yongsan 19:36), 18:53 (Yongsan 20:15), 19:40 (Yongsan 21:02), 21:10 (Yongsan 22:32) and 22:14. There is a gap of exactly 1½ hours between 19:40 and 21:10, so choose one before dinner.

Fares (Korail ITX-Cheongchun fare table, standard adult):

  • Yongsan → Chuncheon ₩9,800; → Namchuncheon ₩9,600
  • Cheongnyangni → Chuncheon ₩8,600
  • Sangbong → Chuncheon ₩8,200
  • Cheongnyangni → Gangchon ₩7,000; → Gapyeong ₩5,700
  • Gapyeong or Gangchon → Chuncheon ₩3,000 (the minimum fare)

Some English-language blogs quote ₩7,300 for Seoul to Chuncheon. That figure does not appear in Korail's current fare table for any Seoul station, so do not plan with it.

Tickets. Book in the Korail Talk app (코레일톡) or at the station. Since 27 February 2026 the app also sells unreserved (자유석) and standing (입석) tickets for the ITX-Cheongchun, and you can check in yourself for an unreserved seat. On autumn weekends, book a reserved seat on a morning train a few days ahead, as they can sell out.

Gangchon stops. Most ITX trains run through Gangchon without stopping. On weekdays only three trains toward Chuncheon stop there (leaving Gangchon at 13:58, 17:07 and 21:43). Four toward Seoul stop there (leaving at 07:45, 14:19, 19:53 and 21:23). This is why the plan below uses the subway for the Gugok Falls leg.

Gyeongchun Line subway: the ₩3,250 option

The Gyeongchun Line (경춘선) is part of the Seoul metro network. You pay with a T-money card and nothing needs booking. Most trains start at Sangbong (상봉, Line 7 and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line), and a few start at Kwangwoon University or Cheongnyangni. Most run to Chuncheon, although a few stop short at Pyeongnae-Hopyeong. Every train that goes through to Chuncheon stops at Gapyeong, Gangchon and Namchuncheon.

  • Fare by card: ₩3,250 from Sangbong, Cheongnyangni, Hoegi or Kwangwoon University to Chuncheon, ₩3,350 from Wangsimni and ₩3,450 from Yongsan (Korail metro fare table, 28 February 2026).
  • Time: about 1 hour 25 from Sangbong to Chuncheon (82–88 minutes), and 80–98 minutes on trains that start at Cheongnyangni.
  • First and last, weekdays: the first train leaves Sangbong at 05:10 and reaches Chuncheon at 06:32. The last through train leaves Sangbong at 23:18 and arrives at 00:40. Going back, the last train that reaches Sangbong leaves Chuncheon at 22:44 and arrives at 00:06. Later trains from Chuncheon stop short at Pyeongnae-Hopyeong.
  • Weekends: the first train leaves Sangbong at 05:30, the last leaves at 23:12, and the last back to Sangbong leaves Chuncheon at 22:45.
  • How often: about every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 25 minutes at weekends (city page figure).

The subway seats run along the sides of the car, as on the Seoul metro. For a 1 hour 25 ride that is fine; for more comfort, take the ITX.

By bus from Dong Seoul or Gangnam

  • Dong Seoul Terminal (동서울종합터미널) → Chuncheon intercity bus terminal: 55 buses a day, 06:15 to 23:40, ₩9,400. Buses from 22:10 cost ₩11,200. Most take 1 hour 13, but a few take up to 1 hour 56. Back to Dong Seoul: 55 a day, 06:00 to 22:40.
  • Seoul Express Bus Terminal → Chuncheon express terminal: 10 a day, 06:50 to 21:00, ₩11,000, about 1 hour 39.

The bus is a good choice if you are staying near Gangbyeon (Line 2). On a Sunday evening the train is the safer bet, because traffic toward Seoul cannot hold it up.

A sample Chuncheon day trip timeline (weekday)

This plan is for Wednesday 4 November 2026. We chose a Wednesday because the Skywalk is closed on Tuesdays. The train times come from Korail's weekday timetable, so the plan works on any weekday except Tuesday. Short taxi rides link the stops in town. We did not time or price these rides, so check the fare in Kakao T before you get in.

Total for train and subway fares: ₩13,100 (₩8,600 + ₩1,650 + ₩2,850), or ₩14,300 if you start at Yongsan. Add ₩4,000 in entry fees, which come back as vouchers, plus lunch and three or four taxi rides. Only the Skywalk voucher comes in time to spend on lunch; keep the Gugok Falls one for a coffee in Gangchon before the train. Optional: if you would rather stay for dinner and go back by ITX, the 19:53 from Gangchon reaches Cheongnyangni at 20:45. That fare is ₩7,000 instead of ₩2,850, which makes the train-and-subway total ₩17,250.

Doing it on a weekend? The weekend timetable has 26 ITX trains each way, so there are more options. Check the Gangchon stops in Korail Talk before you build the afternoon around them.

Soyang River Skywalk (소양강 스카이워크)

The Skywalk is a glass-floored walkway that runs out over the Soyang River. It is 174 m long, and 156 m of that is glass. It starts on the bank about 150 m downstream of the Soyang Maiden statue (소양강처녀상), which is named after a well-known Korean trot song about the river.

  • Hours: 10:00–20:30 in the summer season and 10:00–17:30 in winter. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The city page does not say which months count as winter, so in November plan on 17:30 to be safe.
  • Closed: every Tuesday, and in bad weather.
  • Entry: ₩2,000. You get it back as a ₩2,000 Chuncheon Love voucher (춘천사랑상품권), which local shops and restaurants accept.
  • Rules: shoe covers are handed out at the entrance, and high heels are not allowed.
  • Address: 2663 Yeongseo-ro (영서로 2663), tel. 033-240-1695. Parking costs ₩600 for 30 minutes.

The city also closes the Skywalk for maintenance now and then, so check the notice board on the city tourism site the week before you go.

Dakgalbi: Myeongdong Alley and what a serving costs

Chuncheon dakgalbi is cooked at the table. A server tips marinated chicken, cabbage, sweet potato, rice cakes and perilla leaves onto a round iron pan and stirs it until it is done. When the pan is nearly empty, ask for fried rice (볶음밥) to be cooked in the leftover sauce. Most shops sell it by the serving (1인분), and many have a two-serving minimum.

Myeongdong Dakgalbi Alley (명동닭갈비골목) is in central Chuncheon, at 2 Myeongdong-gil (명동길 2). The alley is lined with dakgalbi shops, and the city lists it as free and always open. Opening hours differ from shop to shop, so check the one you want in Naver Map or Kakao Map.

What we could and could not verify on prices. None of the alley shops publishes a dated menu online, and the city's restaurant pages list hours but no prices. So this guide gives no Myeongdong alley price, because we would be guessing. The only official prices we found come from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's "good price shop" register (착한가격업소). That register lists Chuncheon restaurants that keep prices below the local average:

Shop (area)DishListed price
장군닭갈비 Janggun Dakgalbi (Toegye-dong)Dakgalbi, 300 g₩13,000
봉수닭갈비 Bongsu Dakgalbi (Hyoja-dong)Dakgalbi, 300 g₩13,500

Listed prices on goodprice.go.kr, read 1 November 2026 (price-board photos uploaded April 2026).

Read these as a floor, not an average. They are from shops chosen because they are cheaper. Expect the busier shops in the Myeongdong alley to charge more for the same 300 g. Check the price board by the door before you sit down. The register and the city list name all these shops, so you can look them up in Naver Map or Kakao Map by their Korean names.

Gongjicheon Sculpture Park (공지천 조각공원)

Gongjicheon is a stream that flows into Lake Uiam (의암호) on the edge of the city centre. Its riverside park has held outdoor sculptures since 1997 and covers 26,928 m². It is free and always open, and you can walk it off after lunch. The paths along the stream and the lake are flat and easy.

Gongjicheon Sculpture Park in winter: pale dry grass, bare and pine trees with wooden support poles, and sculptures and stone figures among the trees, apartment blocks faint in the background.

A winter view titled "공지천조각공원의 전경" (Gongjicheon Sculpture Park) by its photographer, 26 December 2023. Photo: YellowTurtle9, Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 4.0).

On the same lake is the Uiam Lake Skywalk (의암호 스카이워크), a second, free glass walkway over the lake. It is small, and there is no parking right beside it, so expect a walk of about 15 minutes. It is open 09:00–18:00 but closes for the winter from mid-November to mid-March. In early November, go before the closure; after that, the Soyang River Skywalk is your only glass floor.

Gugok Falls (구곡폭포)

Gugok Falls is a waterfall of about 50 m (the city page gives both 47 m and 50 m) in a forest valley above Gangchon, in Namsan-myeon (남산면). In winter it freezes into an ice wall that climbers use.

  • Entry: ₩2,000, returned as a voucher. Entry is free for residents of Chuncheon, Hongcheon, Hwacheon, Yanggu and Inje, for people 65 and over, for children under 7, for national merit holders, for people with disabilities and for basic-livelihood recipients.
  • Hours: open all year, with no set closing time on the city page. In November, though, the valley gets dark early, so plan to be back at the ticket office before 16:30.
  • Getting there: the city says it is about an hour's walk from Gangchon Station to the ticket office, then about 15 minutes to Gugokjeong pavilion (구곡정) and on to the falls. A taxi cuts out the road walk.
  • Address: 254 Gangchongugok-gil, Namsan-myeon (남산면 강촌구곡길 254), tel. 033-261-0088.

Mistakes to avoid on a Chuncheon day trip

  1. Going on a Tuesday. The Skywalk is shut every Tuesday.
  2. Assuming every ITX stops at Gangchon. Most do not. Use the subway for Gangchon, or check the stop list in the app.
  3. Planning with a ₩7,300 ITX fare. Korail's fare table gives ₩8,600 from Cheongnyangni and ₩9,800 from Yongsan.
  4. Missing the 19:40. On weekdays the next ITX to Seoul after 19:40 is at 21:10.
  5. Throwing away the vouchers. The ₩2,000 vouchers from the Skywalk and Gugok Falls are worth ₩2,000 each at local shops.
  6. Ordering one serving of dakgalbi. Many shops have a two-serving minimum. If you are travelling alone, ask first (1인분 돼요?).
