Hwadam Forest, Korea: How Foreigners Book Autumn Tickets and the Monorail
Last updated: 12 October 2026. Hours, prices and booking rules come from Hwadam Forest's own notices on hwadamsup.com: the Korean "10~11월 이용안내" (October–November visitor information, revised 18 September 2026), the autumn peak booking notice and the English "Online Booking Guide for Foreigners". All three are published as images, so we read them in a browser. Availability comes from the English booking page on NOL World, checked on 12 October. Sources are at the end.
Hwadam Forest (화담숲, Hwadamsup) is the arboretum in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province (경기도 광주시), about an hour south-east of Seoul. It is the most famous autumn-colour garden near the capital. In October and November you cannot just turn up and buy a ticket. Every visit is booked online in advance, for a set entry hour, and the monorail (모노레일) that most photos show is a separate ticket again.
Hwadam's English website shows these rules only as pictures, which neither a search engine nor a translation app can read. The short version, as of October 2026: adult entry costs ₩11,000, and the full monorail loop adds ₩9,000. You can book on the English site with or without a Korean phone number. A missed slot is not refunded. The garden closes for the year after Sunday 22 November.

Hwadam has no drinking fountains or water purifiers, only a few vending machines, and drinks are among the few things you may carry in. Fill it with hot coffee for an 08:00 slot and you have something warm for two hours on a cold slope. As an Amazon Associate, EpicKor earns from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. See the LocknLock tumbler on AmazonThe Catch: You Book Online, for an Hour, or You Don't Get In
In autumn Hwadam works like a concert:
- You buy a ticket for a date and an entry hour. The English booking page offers hourly slots from 09:00 to 16:00. The foreigner notice says plainly: "Entry outside of the reserved time is prohibited."
- There is no walk-up sale for foreigners. The foreigner guide says "On-site ticket issuance is not available." The Korean FAQ allows on-site sales "only when tickets remain", which you shouldn't count on in peak season.
- Discounts are switched off in October and November, including the usual ₩1,000–3,000 off for LG U+ members and visitors with disabilities.
- Peak-season tickets are limited to six per person for 23 October to 15 November, and resale is banned. Resold tickets can be cancelled without notice, with a penalty of up to ten times the ticket price.
How a foreigner books, step by step
- Go to hwadamsup.com/english and press Booking. It opens Hwadam's product on NOL World (world.nol.com), the English store of Nol Universe (놀유니버스, formerly Yanolja), which runs Hwadam's ticketing.
- Pick a date (tickets are on sale up to 22 November; later dates on the calendar have none), an hour, and Adult, Senior (65+), Youth (13–18) or Child (2–12). A combined ticket adds Hwadamchae (화담채, the exhibition hall, ₩5,000).
- Pay by card. The QR voucher is issued instantly and nothing needs printing. Show it at the gate.
If a Korean friend books for you on the Korean site, they must forward the KakaoTalk notification and you enter with the QR inside it. A screenshot is not accepted.
What the English channel looked like on 12 October
On 12 October every date to 22 November still had English-channel tickets. Each hourly slot appears to hold about 50. The tightest slots were mid-morning in early November: Wednesday 4 November at 10:00 had 7 left, and Sunday 1 November at 10:00 had 11.
That is the English allocation only; Korean-site peak weekends are a separate pool that Korean media call hard to get every year. Read it as "the English door is open", not "the garden will be quiet". A 2025 Herald K report put the cap at about 10,000 visitors a day, roughly 1,000 an hour.
One quirk: from 23 October to 15 November the gates open at 08:00, but the first English slot is 09:00.
Refunds: assume a missed slot is money gone
- NOL World's English page: a 100% refund up to the day before your date, and "no refunds are available thereafter".
- Hwadam's foreigner notice: "No refund for no-shows or same-day cancellations."
- Hwadam's Korean peak-season notice and FAQ are a little softer. They charge a 30% cancellation fee on the day or for a no-show, rather than keeping the whole price. Which rule applies to an English-channel booking is not spelled out, so plan on the stricter one.
- Monorail tickets bought on the Korean channel: full refund up to the day before, 30% fee until two hours before departure, nothing after that. A monorail cancelled for weather or an emergency inspection is refunded in full.
So cancel by the evening before, and check the weather the day before: the garden stays open in rain, but the monorail stops in thunder and lightning.

Opening Hours, October and November 2026
| Dates (2026) | Open days | Hours | Last entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 – 22 October (Thu) | Tuesday – Sunday | 09:00 – 18:00 | 17:00 · closed Monday 12 and 19 October |
| 23 October (Fri) – 1 November (Sun) | Every day | 08:00 – 18:00 | 17:00 |
| 2 – 15 November | Every day | 08:00 – 17:00 | 16:00 |
| 16 – 22 November (Sun) | See note | 09:00 – 17:00 | 16:00 |
The notice lists 16–22 November as "Tuesday–Sunday" but also says there is no closed day, and the English calendar sells Monday 16 November. If you plan on that Monday, recheck the notice board the week before.
After 22 November the garden closes for winter and reopens in spring. Last year it closed from 1 December, in 2024 from 28 November. In 2024 heavy snow also ended the season early, on 28 November itself, with booked tickets refunded. This year's last day is about a week earlier than 2025's, so don't count on extra days.
The Monorail: What Each Ticket Covers, and Why the English Booking Doesn't Sell It

The monorail is a 1,213-metre loop on the west side, from the moss garden entrance up to the top of the garden and back past the bonsai garden. Hwadam built it for visitors who can't manage the slope. Every part of the garden can be reached on foot, including with a stroller or wheelchair.
| Ticket (as of October 2026) | Route | Adult | Child | What it saves you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 (1구간) | Platform 1 → Platform 2 | ₩5,000 | ₩4,000 | About 5 minutes' ride instead of a 40-minute, 1.9 km walk uphill |
| Section 2 (2구간) | Platform 1 → Platform 3 | ₩7,000 | ₩6,000 | About 10 minutes' ride instead of a 70-minute, 3.3 km walk |
| Full loop (순환) | Platform 1 → Platform 1 | ₩9,000 | ₩7,000 | The whole 1,213 m circuit, about 20 minutes |
The rules that catch people out:
- You need a garden ticket first.
- The English channel sells admission only. NOL World says monorail tickets are sold "only while supplies last" at the plaza ticket office (Platform 1 trains) and the platform machines. Korean-site buyers can book Platform 1 seats online, so on peak days many are gone. Platforms 2 and 3 sell their departures only from their own machines, a better bet for walk-up visitors.
- Monorail tickets are timed. Be on the platform 10 minutes early; a missed train is not refunded, traffic and parking included.
- No getting off halfway, and fold the stroller or pay a child fare.
Our honest view: fit adults don't need the monorail. The usual compromise is Section 1 to Platform 2, then the walk down, which Hwadam times at about an hour. The full loop is worth it for grandparents, small children and bad knees. The famous photo of the cars in the maples is taken from the path anyway.
When the Leaves Peak in 2026
Hwadam's "autumn peak season" (가을 성수기) runs 23 October to 15 November (last year: 24 October to 16 November). In our foliage forecast round-up, K-Weather (케이웨더) puts the central region's peak at about 19 October to 1 November, and WeatherEye (웨더아이) at 31 October to 5 November. The whole season is running 2 to 9 days late because of a warm September.
That points to the last week of October and the first week of November. Mid-November is still good lower down; by the final week the upper slopes are mostly bare.
A 2025 Herald K report counted about 400 maple varieties here, among them Naejangsan maple (내장단풍), Korean maple (당단풍), box elder (네군도단풍) and three-flowered maple (복자기).

What You Actually See: the Route
Hwadam covers 165,265 m² of valley slope, with 16 themed gardens and about 4,000 plant species, according to the LG foundation. In autumn the walk runs roughly like this:
- Moss garden (이끼원), then the maple slopes up to the observatory (전망대).
- White birch forest (자작나무 숲), with silver grass in autumn.
- Pine garden (소나무 정원) and bonsai garden (분재원), with chrysanthemum bonsai in autumn.
- Traditional wall path (전통 담장길), stone-and-tile walls framing the colour.
- Hwadamchae (화담채), the exhibition hall, about 30 minutes, combined ticket only.

There are no drinking fountains inside, only a few vending machines, so bring water. A free app offers an audio guide and trail navigation.
Food rules are strict. Drinks and snacks are fine, but other outside food stays out: eat it at the dining area left of the ticket plaza or leave it in a ₩1,000 locker. Inside, 번지없는 주막 by the duck pond serves seafood pancake (해물파전) and Chungmu gimbap, 10:30–18:00.
Banned: alcohol, picnic mats, tents, tripods, scooters, drones and pets (guide dogs excepted).

Getting There Without a Car

By subway (easiest): take the Gyeonggang Line (경강선), which meets the Shinbundang Line at Pangyo (판교), five stops and about 20 minutes to Gonjiam Station (곤지암역). Then take a taxi or the Gwangju 9 village bus (광주9), which Hwadam times at about 30 minutes. The bus runs only about every 50 minutes, so check it on Naver Map or Kakao Map. From Gangnam, allow roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter door to gate (our estimate).
By express bus: the 1113-1 from Gangbyeon (강변역) or 500-1 from Jamsil (잠실역), about 1 hour 30 minutes to Gonjiam Terminal (곤지암터미널), then a taxi or the same bus. Pay with a T-money card.
Inside the resort: a free shuttle links Parking Lot 2 and the ticket office every 10–15 minutes, from 08:00 between 23 October and 15 November (09:00 from 13 to 22 October and from 16 November), with returns until 18:00. Or walk about 10 minutes from the resort's EW Village.
Shuttles from Seoul: Gonjiam Resort's shuttle booking sits behind a member login, and we could not confirm any autumn service, so don't plan around one. Peak-weekend road traffic is heavy; the train is safer.
Want to be at the gate for the first slot? Hwadam sits right next to Gonjiam Resort in Gwangju, so sleeping nearby puts you at the gate before the day-trippers' traffic builds. Worth it for a weekday 09:00 slot or a longer Gyeonggi trip; not for a simple day trip. EpicKor may earn a commission from qualifying Agoda bookings at no extra cost to you. Check dates, taxes and cancellation terms on Agoda before you book.

When to Go, and When to Skip It
Go if:
- You want red-maple autumn without a mountain hike, on paths built for strollers and wheelchairs.
- You can go on a weekday in late October or early November, or with older parents or small children.
Skip it, or change plans, if:
- You hate crowds and only have a peak-weekend afternoon. About 1,000 people enter every hour on narrow paths. A 09:00 or midweek slot is much calmer.
- You want wild autumn. Hwadam is a designed garden. For ridgelines, see Seoraksan or Naejangsan (and the trails that close from 15 November), or Nami Island for an easy day.
- You're relying on a walk-up ticket or a Platform 1 monorail seat on an early-November Saturday.
