Korean Towels: What 40수 and 180g Mean, and Why You Keep Being Given Them

Spend a year in Korea and you will accumulate towels you did not buy. A wedding, a first birthday, a shop opening, a company anniversary — each one hands you a towel, often with a name and a date printed on it. Nobody explains why.

Spend ten minutes on a Korean towel site and you hit the second thing nobody explains. Every product is listed as something like 최고급 40수 / 180g / 40×80cm. Three numbers, no GSM, no "600 thread count", none of the vocabulary an English-language towel listing uses.

Meanwhile the same brand's towels on Amazon are sold as "470 GSM, 20×40 inch".

Both descriptions are of the same object. This article translates between them, gives the current Korean prices, and explains the gift thing.

The Three Numbers on Every Korean Towel

Korean towel listings lead with 수, pronounced su. It is yarn count: how fine the thread is.

• 20수 — thick, coarse yarn. Cheap, hard-wearing, the kind used for gym and workshop towels.
• 30수 — the everyday middle.
• 40수 — finer thread. Softer hand, denser pile for the same weight, and what the "hotel" lines use.

Higher 수 does not mean thicker. It means finer thread, which is the opposite of what most English speakers assume when they see a bigger number. Thickness is the second number.

That second number is the gram weight of one towel. Songwol's own site sorts by it and labels the bands in plain Korean:

Here is the trap. The gram figure on a Korean towel is the weight of that one towel. GSM is grams per square metre. They are not the same number and they are not close.

• Go up in grams, not in 수, if you want it plusher. 190 g and above is the 고중량 band.
• Only go up in size if you actually want a bigger towel. 50 × 100 cm nearly doubles the price and does not improve the weave.
• 코마사 means combed cotton. It is a real quality marker and appears in the product name when it applies.
• 뱀부얀 is the bamboo-yarn line, a separate branch from the cotton grades, not a higher tier of it.
• Ignore the list price. Compare selling prices.
