Nutcracker in Seoul 2026: Dates, ₩10,000 Seats and How Foreigners Book
Last updated: 29 October 2026. Read that day on the Seoul Arts Center's own pages (sac.or.kr): the English and Korean pages for "2026 SAC & KNB The Nutcracker", the English ticket purchase guide, the membership page and the directions page; the Korea National Ballet's performance page; and Universal Ballet's performance and repertory pages, plus its NOL ticket listing. ₩1,325 = US$1 (US Federal Reserve rate via FRED, 23 October 2026). The Nutcracker in Seoul this December is two productions. The big one is 2026 SAC & KNB The Nutcracker (호두까기인형, hodukkagi-inhyeong), the Korea National Ballet (국립발레단) at the Seoul Arts Center (예술의전당, Yesurui Jeondang) Opera Theater, 11–27 December 2026. Seats cost R ₩120,000 (US$91), S ₩100,000 ($75), A ₩60,000 ($45), B ₩30,000 ($23) and C ₩10,000 ($7.55). Tickets go on sale to SAC's free members on Wednesday 4 November at 13:00 Korea time, a day after paid members. The second is Universal Ballet (유니버설발레단) at the Sejong Center, 17–30 December, already on sale since 15 October, from ₩30,000 to ₩140,000.
The catch for visitors is on the Seoul Arts Center's own English guide: "it is not possible to pay for a ticket on our website with an overseas card." This guide gives the dates and times, what each seat costs, the three ways a foreigner can actually get in, the refund rules (the day-of fee is 90%), and how the two productions differ.

The Seoul Arts Center and the Korea National Ballet have staged this Nutcracker together every winter since 2000, and SAC's Korean page calls it the year-end steady seller with "a run of sold-out houses" (전석 매진 행렬). The run is 11 to 27 December, but read the Korean page carefully before you plan around the first weekend. It says: "12/11, 12, 15 sales have closed because the whole house was rented" (전관대관으로 판매가 마감). In other words, those performances were rented out whole (전관대관) before public sale. The English page simply lists 15 December as "No performances", and the Korea National Ballet's own page gives the run as 12–27 December. For a visitor buying a ticket, the run starts on Sunday 13 December.
| Date (December 2026) | Day | Curtain | Public sale? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11, 12 | Fri, Sat | 19:30 · 14:00 and 18:30 | No, whole house pre-sold |
| 13 | Sun | 14:00, 18:30 | Yes |
| 14 | Mon | — | Dark |
| 15 | Tue | — | No (pre-sold / no performance) |
| 16, 17, 18 | Wed–Fri | 19:30 | Yes |
| 19, 20 | Sat, Sun | 14:00, 18:30 | Yes |
| 21 | Mon | — | Dark |
| 22, 23, 24 | Tue–Thu | 19:30 | Yes (24 is Christmas Eve) |
| 25 | Fri, Christmas Day | 14:00 only | Yes |
| 26 | Sat | 14:00, 18:30 | Yes |
| 27 | Sun, closing | 14:00 only | Yes |
By our count from that timetable, 16 performances are on public sale. The ones that go first every year are predictable: the Christmas Eve evening, the Christmas Day matinee and the weekend matinees, which are the family slots. If your dates are flexible, a Wednesday or Thursday evening in the week of 16 December is the easiest ticket. Christmas Day is a public holiday in Korea (see our guide to Christmas in Korea 2026 for what is open that day).
The show runs two hours: a 50-minute first act, a 20-minute interval and a 50-minute second act, played live by the Korean National Symphony Orchestra (국립심포니오케스트라). An evening performance at 19:30 therefore ends around 21:30.
Nutcracker Seoul ticket prices: what ₩10,000 to ₩120,000 buys
SAC sells five price bands for the Opera Theater. The dollar figures below use ₩1,325 to the dollar.
| Seat band | Price | In US dollars | Discounts apply? |
|---|---|---|---|
| R석 (R seat) | ₩120,000 | about $91 | Yes |
| S석 | ₩100,000 | about $75 | Yes |
| A석 | ₩60,000 | about $45 | Yes |
| B석 | ₩30,000 | about $23 | Yes |
| C석 | ₩10,000 | about $7.55 | No, excluded from every discount |
A ₩10,000 seat for a full-length ballet with a live national orchestra is the cheapest way in, and SAC itself describes the production's long run of sold-out houses, so expect the C band to go early. SAC does not publish which rows fall in which band before sale opens; the seating map appears in the booking window on 4 November. What the venue does publish is the house itself: 2,270 seats in total, of which 1,980 go on general sale. The other 290 are held back: 48 with a poor view of the surtitles and 242 with a restricted view of the stage. SAC says restricted-view seats may be released only once a performance is otherwise sold out.
| Floor | Seats | Of which restricted view |
|---|---|---|
| 1st floor (1층) | 946 (850 general, 10 accessible, 48 orchestra-pit seats) | 38 |
| 2nd floor | 487 | 124 (48 surtitle + 76 view) |
| 3rd floor | 443 (12 accessible) | 68 |
| 4th floor | 394 | 60 |
Two honest warnings from SAC's own notes. The last row of the first floor can be warm and noisy from the equipment behind it. And every upper floor has a safety railing that, depending on your height and seat, can cut into the view. The seating map on the booking page lets you click a seat and see a photograph taken from it; use it before you pay.
Discounts, and which ones a visitor can use
Most of SAC's discount list is for Korean residents (disability welfare cards, the 문화누리카드 culture card, multi-child family cards). A few are age-based and could, in principle, work for a visitor:
- Children aged 48 months to 12: 30% off, one ticket, R to B bands only.
- Youth aged 13 to 24: 30% off, one ticket, S, A and B bands only.
- Seniors 65 and over: 40% off, one ticket, R to B.
- Groups: 20% off R to B with no limit, by phone only (1668-1352).
All of them require proof at the pickup desk: SAC asks for a document that shows the date of birth, and if you cannot show it you pay the difference before you go in. SAC's pages do not say whether a foreign passport is accepted for these discounts, so ask the call centre before you book at a discount.

How foreigners book Nutcracker tickets in Seoul

SAC sells tickets four ways: its website (PC and mobile), the SAC Pass app, the call centre and the Service Plaza desk on site. Online orders are capped at 10 tickets per order, and booking online needs an SAC account. Free membership (일반회원) is open to anyone 25 and over, with a separate free SACteen tier for ages 7 to 24 and a Noble tier for 69 and over. That free membership is what lets you buy from 4 November.
The trouble is payment. SAC's English ticket guide says the website does not take overseas cards. Its payment options are a card, which in practice means a Korean-issued one, or a virtual-account bank transfer (가상계좌), which in practice needs a Korean bank account and must be paid at least four days before the performance (the English page says five; the Korean page says four). That leaves three realistic routes for a visitor.
| Route | How it works | Good for | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Global Interpark / NOL World | SAC's guide points overseas cards to the Global Interpark website (globalinterpark.com). Interpark's English ticket listings for SAC ballet now appear on world.nol.com | Booking from abroad before you fly | SAC warns the global site "does not sell tickets for all performances". NOL World listed the Korea National Ballet's Swan Lake at the same theatre in April 2026, but when we checked we could not find the 2026 Nutcracker there, so check before relying on it |
| 2. Box office on the day | SAC accepts overseas cards at the venue's ticket office on the performance day. It opens 90 minutes before curtain | Weekday evenings, last-minute plans | Only what is left. For a show that sells out most years, expect little or nothing on weekends and at Christmas |
| 3. A Korean friend or your hotel | Someone with an SAC account and a Korean card books on the website at 13:00 on 4 November | The cheap C and B bands, the first-weekend rush | The ticket is in their name; pickup needs the booking number or the booker's ID, so agree who collects |
SAC's call centre (1668-1352; Tuesday to Friday 09:00–19:00, weekends and holidays 09:00–18:00, closed Mondays, lunch 12:00–13:00) takes phone bookings. Its pages do not say whether a phone booking can be paid with a foreign card, and we could not confirm it, so treat that as a question to ask rather than a fourth route.
What 13:00 on 4 November means where you live: 04:00 GMT on Wednesday 4 November in London, and 23:00 on Tuesday 3 November in New York (20:00 in Los Angeles). The US clocks change on 1 November, so do not use a summer-time offset.
Picking up the ticket
Collect at the box office on the day (it opens 90 minutes before the performance and stays open through the interval) or at the Service Plaza inside the Vitamin Station building (Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–20:00). Bring the booking number or the booker's ID. SAC asks people to arrive at least 30 minutes early because the queue before curtain is long. Mail delivery (₩3,700) needs a Korean address and two weeks' notice. One more rule that matters: tickets bought through another seller cannot be collected at SAC's own desk; follow the pickup instructions that seller gives you. And SAC warns that tickets bought through private resale, second-hand sites or anywhere other than the official sellers can be cancelled without notice and refused at the door; Korea's resale crackdown is covered in our concert ticket guide.
Refunds, latecomers and house rules
| When you cancel | Fee |
|---|---|
| 10 days or more before the performance | None, full refund |
| 9 days to 1 day before | 10% of the ticket price |
| On the day, up to 2 hours before curtain | 90% of the ticket price (not at the box office) |
| Bought within 3 days of the show and cancelled the same day you bought it | None |
Refunds go back only to the card or account you paid with: card refunds take four to five days, bank refunds about two working days. A ticket bought at the Service Plaza or sent by post must be returned in person by the day before the show. Lost tickets are not reissued.
The house rules are strict and worth knowing before you arrive:
- Latecomers are held and seated at set points, sometimes in a latecomer area rather than your own seat. If you leave mid-show you may not get back in.
- No food or drink in the theatre, including bottled water.
- Age 48 months and up. A child under the age limit is refused even with a ticket and a parent, and an age misunderstanding is not grounds for a refund on the day. SAC asks families to bring a document showing the child's age (it names the Korean health insurance card); ask the call centre whether a passport is accepted. Every person, including a small child, needs their own ticket.
- Take public transport. SAC says parking congestion is not grounds for a refund if you miss the curtain.

Which Nutcracker this is: Grigorovich at the Seoul Arts Center

The Korea National Ballet dances Yuri Grigorovich's version, which SAC says is the grandest and most spectacular of the many Nutcrackers staged around the world each Christmas. SAC also says Grigorovich led the Bolshoi Ballet for 33 years. The staging keeps the Bolshoi look: sets and costumes by Simon Virsaladze, lighting by Mikhail Sokolov. The heroine is Marie (마리), not Clara, and the story follows the version SAC prints in Korean: a Christmas Eve party, the godfather Drosselmeyer with his clockwork dolls, the broken nutcracker, the midnight battle with the mice in which Marie throws a lit candle at the Mouse King, the snowflakes, and a second act on top of the Christmas tree with Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Russian and French dances, a dance of the flowers and a closing pas de deux that the synopsis calls a wedding. It all turns out to be a dream on Christmas morning.
Universal Ballet's Nutcracker at Sejong Center: the comparison
Seoul's other major company, Universal Ballet, brings its own Nutcracker to the Sejong Center Grand Theater (세종문화회관 대극장) in Gwanghwamun this year, billed as the 40th anniversary of its Korean premiere: Universal Ballet first danced it on 18 December 1986 at the Little Angels Arts Center. Since 1999 its staging has been based on Vasily Vainonen's version (an adaptation of Petipa's original, per Universal Ballet), brought in by its artistic director Oleg Vinogradov, a former artistic director of the Mariinsky Ballet. The company says it had passed 649 performances and 700,000 audience members by 2012.

Universal Ballet has one detail Korean audiences notice: the actor Park Sang-won (박상원) appears as Drosselmeyer on five dates, 20 December 14:00, 23 December 19:30, 25 December 18:00, 27 December 14:00 and 30 December 19:30. Its NOL listing also warns that some dates and seats were sold to groups in advance. For a visitor the practical differences are simple. Universal Ballet is in the middle of the tourist map, near Gwanghwamun Square and the Christmas market (see our Seoul Winter Festa guide), it plays until 30 December, and it is already on sale. The Korea National Ballet's version is the cheaper night out, with the ₩10,000 C band that Universal Ballet does not have, but its tickets are harder to buy from abroad.
Both companies also tour their Nutcrackers around Korea before Christmas. The Korea National Ballet plays Gimhae on 24–25 November and Jeonju on 28–29 November; Universal Ballet visits Gangneung, Goyang, Pyeongtaek, Changwon, Gunsan and, on 11–12 December, Daejeon.
Getting to the Seoul Arts Center

SAC's directions page gives the subway options:
- Line 3, Nambu Bus Terminal Station (남부터미널), exit 5: under 10 minutes on foot, or two stops on town bus Seocho 22.
- Line 2, Seocho Station, exit 3: town bus Seocho 11 (four stops), or about 25 minutes' walk.
- Line 4, Sadang Station, exit 1: town bus Seocho 17 (16 stops).
- City buses stopping at the centre: blue 405 and 406, green 5413, red 1500-2.
If you are staying in Myeongdong or Jongno, Line 3 runs straight down from Chungmuro and Jongno 3-ga, with no change. Leave more time than the app says: SAC is a campus of several buildings, and the box-office queue before curtain is long. The Service Plaza, where you can collect tickets in the daytime, is in the Vitamin Station building.
SAC sets no dress code on its show page. December evenings in Seoul are cold, and the open plaza between the buildings is exposed, so dress for the walk.
FAQ
Q: When is the Nutcracker at the Seoul Arts Center in 2026?
A: From 11 to 27 December 2026 at the Opera Theater. The 11, 12 and 15 December performances were sold whole to block bookings, so public sale effectively starts with the matinee on Sunday 13 December. Weekday shows start at 19:30, weekend shows at 14:00 and 18:30, and the 25 and 27 December shows are 14:00 only. There are no Monday performances.
Q: How much are Nutcracker tickets in Seoul?
A: At the Seoul Arts Center: R ₩120,000, S ₩100,000, A ₩60,000, B ₩30,000 and C ₩10,000, about US$91 down to $7.55. Universal Ballet at Sejong Center charges ₩30,000 to ₩140,000.
Q: When do Nutcracker tickets open?
A: For the Korea National Ballet run, paid SAC members can buy from Tuesday 3 November at 13:00 Korea time, and free members from Wednesday 4 November at 13:00. Universal Ballet's tickets have been on sale since 15 October.
Q: Can foreigners buy Seoul Arts Center tickets online?
A: Not with an overseas card on the SAC website; SAC says so in its English ticket guide. It points visitors to the Global Interpark website, which sells some SAC shows but not all, and to the box office, which takes overseas cards on the performance day.
Q: Is there an age limit?
A: Yes. The Korea National Ballet's Nutcracker admits children from 48 months, and Universal Ballet's from age 4. Bring proof of age: children under the limit are refused even with a ticket.
Q: How long is the Nutcracker?
A: Two hours at both: about 50 minutes per act with a 20-minute interval.
Q: What is the cancellation fee?
A: At SAC, nothing up to 10 days before, 10% from 9 days to 1 day before, and 90% on the day (up to 2 hours before curtain).
